Transgender Military Ban
Discrimination is still a major issue all over the world in today’s society. For instance, In the United States, transgenders have now been banned to serve in the military. These people deserve the potential and capability to defend their nation. Many close-minded people come to the conclusion that transgenders are weak and it is affecting our military when in reality they are doing the complete opposite. They deserve to be treated equally and be given the same rights because they are also a human and deserve the same respect. The overall best decision is to lift the ban and apologize for taking away their rights or else there will never be equality in our society.
Just a year ago, transgenders were given the right to freely serve in the military, but now Donald Trump took away their ability to do so. On July 26, Trump tweeted, “ Our military must be forced on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you.” (Trump) He has called these certain soldiers a burden because the costs are going to medical purposes instead of strengthening the military. Although this may be true to an extent, it is not a very reasonable reason to take away their right to serve. A study has shown that the treatments would cost, “... we expect only a 0.13-percent ($8.4 million out of $6.2 billion) increase in health care spending… By contrast, total military
Is it right that Donald Trump bans Transgenders that have the capability to fight and train like everyone else? Serving for the military is a great opportunity that has been taken away from Transgenders, that deserve that opportunity, and here’s three reasons that Transgenders should be able to serve. Three reasons why Transgenders should stay in the military are they shouldn’t be kicked out and deployed out of the military despise their gender. The military will lose approximately 15,000 active troops that were doing an amazing job at serving our country. Finally, because the Donald Trump claims that the medical cost is too much, but training and getting troops up to readiness standards will cost more money.
Every day, there are American citizens who risk their lives for the sake of their country's safety. Men and women who believe that justice, peace, and equality should be served. However, within their beliefs, some choose to exclude transgender individuals who have the same rights and freedoms. The American society considers the world to be progressively changing and growing, however, seem to forget that in order for the military to survive the 21st century, diversity is crucial. Although the medical costs may raise the overall healthcare median per year, transgender individuals should have the right to serve in the U.S. armed forces because any human being who meets the physical qualifications and has a willing attitude should have the right to serve.
Transgendered persons can potentially lose their position in the military. Although other political leaders disagree with president’s trumps proposal. I disagree with the proposed actions that transgenders should be banned from the military, based on material and nonmaterial components. The terms Heterosexism, cultural relativism, feminist and standpoint theory will be used to support my decision.
Banning transgendered individuals from serving in the military also contradicts civil rights. Civil rights are an assurance to the citizen of U.S. that they will have equality. Equality meaning, no discrimination against one’s gender, age or race. The decision to ban transgenders from the military is clearly an act of gender issues. Trump is not focusing on the problem with potential threats to the U.S. is problem is gender, transgenders. Its prohibited by the government to treat any being differently due to their gender. It does not matter if women decided to become a man and/or a man decided to become a woman, that a free choice and has nothing to do with serving this country. The ban against these individuals in the military also violates the Declaration of Independence, this is a natural right. This is a defilement of the civil rights.
Lately, there has been an outbreak of people of the LGBT community coming out in the military. Historically the United States has had a policy of discharging gays in the military. There has been an act called the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”, it is basically saying that as long as somebody does not ask about your gender preferences, you do not have to tell. Even though the ban has been lifted, many militaries still say they cannot accept anyone from the LGBT inside. They do not care about how well you can perform or your strengths and that mindset is going to come back and hit them in the long run. Militaries that are judging these kids are taking them away from somewhere they feel safe and a place where they can finally belong. Members of the LGBT community find refuge in the military. It was one of the only places where they can prove their worth, where people aren’t focusing on their sexuality. They shouldn’t be judged based on their sexual preferences. Instead, they should be judged on their personality, performance, and their ability to get the job done precisely and correctly.
According to Meyer and Northridge (2007), transgender advocates claim that policies that force individuals to conceal their identities can have significant mental health consequences such as stress or low self-esteem, and those could cause a TSM to treat their symptoms with alcohol or drugs, which could lead to dependence. If the ban is lifted, DOD could be required to pay for reconstructive genital surgery, cosmetic surgeries such as laser hair removal, or other reconstructive surgery, especially if a physician deems it necessary for a TSM’s mental health. They could be forced to pay for TSM to obtain surgeries while at the same time denying comparable surgeries for traditional SM who suffer from real or perceived body issues that cause similar symptoms. Will female Soldiers whose extremely small breasts severely affect their self-esteem and self-confidence and cause them to feel shame be allowed to obtain breast enlargement surgery at the military’s expense? Would this not mirror the same reasons advocates for TSM give for overturning the ban, the assumption that a SM who is more comfortable with his/her body can live a more authentic life and will be a happier person and therefore a better Soldier? Every SM would then have a right to demand that the military pay for braces to straighten or whiten their teeth in order to ease their mental
In 2016, former president, Barack Obama lifted the ban of transgenders being in the military. Now the question comes up, should transgender be allowed in the military? This is a very “touchy” topic as when discussed in verbal debates, situations can become pretty heated. Recently, current president, Donald Trump reversed the decision and put the ban back on as he made the announcement on Twitter saying, the military does not need to be “burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgenders in the military would entail.” (Caceres). Several members of the military have voiced their opinions on why they think transgenders should be allowed in with no problem.
The military excludes Transgender individuals from serving because, according to Kayla Quam, “In order to join the military, individuals need to meet the physical and psychological standards listed in the Department of Defense’s Medical Standard for Appointment, Enlistment, or Introduction in the Military Services (‘DoDI 613.03’)” (721). Because of physical and mental exams many transgender individuals choose to keep their abnormalities a secret, forcing them to live a double life. Many are disqualified because of mental and false health issues. For example, “Transgender [people] who have undergone sex-reassignment surgery are disqualified under a medical regulation during the physical exam,” and Transgender individuals who have not undergone “sex-reassignment surgery but identify as transgender are disqualified under the psychological examination” (Ross 190). The military deems Transgender individuals as unfit to serve, but approximately 15,500 transgender individuals are serving in the military and there are 134,200 transgender veterans (Gate and Herman 1). Proving that transgender individuals have served in the military successfully, playing against all odds the military is in fact wrong to classify transgender individuals as unfit to serve.
“We the people of the United States, in order to from a more perfect union”. This sentence is used in the preamble of the Constitution, signed on September 17, 1787. It was designed to show us our new formed governments and how they would protect us, showed us the power the government had and didn’t have. It also granted our rights; amendments in the Bill of Rights. But is the term “We the People” still a valid term to use in 2016? We are no longer “We the People” here in 2016. Today, there is an open topic of the LGBT community; whether there should be legal marriage. The topic of Trans bathroom, saying they shouldn’t have the right to use the bathroom with the gender they identify their selves as. Also over the last few years there is an
Throughout centuries of generations, there have been many changes that have influenced sexual tolerance. Sexual tolerance is defined as “the acceptance of multiple sexual orientations and lifestyles, generally accompanied by the appropriate legal and civil rights” (Urban Dictionary, 2009). Though there have been improvements in tolerance, there are still many different views on the recent policies, laws or social trends occurring towards sexual and gender orientation. Every aspect of society, from the Department of Defense to local school departments, are beginning to adapt to this growth in gender identity and orientation. An article published by the New York Times (Rosenberg, 2016) addresses an uprising policy on the acceptance of
When you sit around and never place yourself in someone else's shoes then you are only receiving one perception. I use to always sit and wonder what it would be like to step an transgenders shoes. I wondered if it would be as fun as they make it seem or was it all a front . I was thinking maybe it was scary knowing that people are judging you just off first imperssions and don’t even have to know you to assume something about you. How could that be possible? You would think that it would be a very hard decision to just express yourself to the world as a transgender person. Once I began to think deeply about the situation I started to research on the topic of transgender individuals and it all led back to one thing … Transgender individuals were Transgender children , They didn’t learn to be transgender they were born that way.
“De opresso liber” is the motto of the United States Army Special Forces, which means “to free from oppression” or “to liberate the oppressed.” It is quite ironic how a branch of the United States Military can use such a motto yet still manages to oppress so many people in the country. Donald Trump has reinstated the military transgender ban that people had worked tirelessly to dismantle, but the LGBTQIA+ community is fighting back. People are resisting by filing a lawsuit against the ban, participating in protests throughout the country, and exposing the true cost/benefit analysis of the ban. Transgender troops should have the right to fight for their country, and no one should be allowed to take that right away from them.
I am very disappointed that this ruling for transgender people was reversed. How can someone tell an American citizen who is under the Constitution, that they cannot serve their county because of gender? Transgender people have the same rights as everyone else and they should be treated as such. Transgender people in the military should be evaluated by their works and dedication to serving their country and not if they are male or female. By banning transgender from the military is excluding them from job opportunities and from gaining a college education from within the military.
First, Transgender military troops should serve in the military, because any American who meets current medical and readiness standards should have the right to serve in the military. They got rid of transgenders in the military, because they don’t want to pay for medical bills when a lot of the transgenders that serve in the military have already had their surgeries done. For example, There is no reason to force service members who can fight, train, and deploy to leave the military — regardless of their gender identity. If they can do exactly what everyone else can do, they don’t have the right to ban them from serving our country, despise their gender. According to Ada Edelman, “No American, no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity, should be prohibited
When someone calls themself transgender, it means that they do not identify with the gender they were assigned at birth. For example, someone who was born as a man may later realize that they are in fact a woman; this person would be called a trans woman. There is much debate over transgenderism and, specifically, whether society should treat transgenders as their biological sex or their gender identity. For example, if a transgender man (biological sex being female) wants to use the men’s restroom, should he be able to? The laws that would allow this are known as transgender inclusion laws, and the debate over passing such laws has always been extremely heated. Transgender inclusion laws should be passed in all areas, as there has been no increase in crime rates as a result of transgender use of public facilities, transgenderism is absolutely real and should be recognized as such, and these laws only brings benefits for any trans-friendly environments.
