Petruchio In Taming Of The Shrew

Petruchio is the fearless and confident bachelor from William Shakespeare’s well- known comedy The Taming Of The Shrew who goes to Padua for the specific intention of finding a wealthy wife. Despite the repeated warnings from friends, he is determined to woo the ` famously shrewish, but at the same time wealthy Katherine “Kate” Minola who is equally determined to thwart his advance. Not only does he tame the shrew, but he also brings tremendous impacts to the story. By taming the shrew, he has done a favor for most characters of the play who tries to woo Katherine’s sister. Forcing someone to love you may not sound very positive, but Petruchio is portrayed as a heroic character due to his courageous nature, confidence and his purposeful actions. First of all, Petruchio is courageous to the point of being audacious. For example, as he tells Baptista “Antonio, my father, is deceased, And I have thrust myself into this maze, Happily to wive and thrive as best I may. Crowns in my purse I have and goods at home, And so am come abroad to see the world,” (I. ii. 40- 43). This quote shows, his courage to leave home and to explore the world, despite the possible dangers like being robbed, encounter problems with wildlife and not to mention being killed. Petruchio demonstrates his courage again as he fearlessly goes to woo Kate, regardless of the many warning about her. When Kate tries to frighten him away at their first meeting, he tells her “You lie, in faith, for you are called
