Ian O'Brien (born 3 March 1947) is a former breaststroke swimmer for Australia who won the 200 metre breaststroke at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo in world record time. In 1962 at the age of 15 he competed in his first national championships, winning the 220 yard breaststroke. At the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth, Western Australia, he won both the 110 and 220 yd breaststroke and the 4 × 110 yd medley relay. He won both breaststroke events at the 1963 Australian Championships, repeating the feat for the next three years. After winning his gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, he added a bronze in the medley relay. From 1972-2012 the 100m men’s times have decreased four seconds, and the women’s have decreased six seconds. The men’s 400m swim times have decreased 20 seconds, and the women’s have decreased 19 seconds. The first place times are consistently better. The Olympics become more competitive each year, and times will continue to decrease. The greatest time decrease is in the 400m freestyle, while the lowest is in the 100m freestyle. On May 25th, 1935 Jesse Owens set three world records in a span of forty-five minutes at the Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor(www.jesseowens.com). Despite his sore back that day, he achieved a 9.4 second victory in the 100-meter dash, long jumped 26 ft. 8 ¼ inches, sprinted at 20.3 seconds on the 220-meter sprint, and succeeded in the 220-yard low hurdles at 22.6 seconds. Owens’s achievement stands as perhaps the best single-day accomplishment of any track-and-field athlete history. Because of such great success, Owens entered the 1936 Olympics that were to be held in Berlin, Germany.

After his birth in 1950, Mark Spitz grew up on the beaches of California and Hawaii. "You should have seen that little boy dash into the ocean. He'd run like he was trying to commit suicide."
