When I get older and advance in my career, I would like to be a Certified Pharmacy Technician. Pharmacy Technician is a health care provider who provides pharmacy related functions to people who need medication. We can also work for long-term facilities, third party insurance companies and pharmaceutical manufactures. A pharmacy technician job is never an easy job. Maybe one day I could even become a Pharmacist. A pharmacist is the person who writes prescriptions, knows what drug a client needs and can diagnose a person. Where on the other hand, a pharmacy technician works under them. We give out and sort the medication. A pharmacy technician cannot diagnose a patient. I plan to work hard and get my certifications to get to where they are so I will be able to diagnose people and have that title.

While most acquaintences my age were out partying and having a ball, I was working 12am to 8am on a dementia unit at the VA Hospital, as you may know working nights can make you extremely lazy, when all you do is sleep all day, the pay was great and that also makes you not want to start school or do something with your life, but I saw the bigger picture in a career. I decided to become a Pharmacy Technician originally from High School. My Junior year at Abilene High school I took an elective that covered the basics of different medical fields. After completing the course my junior year, I decided to move forward with the program. So my Senior year in High School I enrolled in dual credit and joined the Pharmacy Tech program at McMurry University. At the time I was also apart of the Abulene High volleyball team. With everything going on between after school practice and games, I had to choose between the two and I chose volleyball. Sad but true because volleyball didn’t take me very far.

Before Electronic prescriptions became available to our health care system. Prescriptions were manually written by the physician. The prescription would have to be taken to the pharmacy where the patient would then have to return to the pharmacy to pick up the medication when it was ready. In my opinion it was a lot harder for a physician to keep track of the medication and how often it was being prescribed. Thus making it easier for an individual to be prescribed narcotic medicinal drugs. A disadvantage to manually written prescriptions was if the dosage was written incorrectly or missing the physicians’ signature or even illegible the patient would then have to go back to the physician.

I was in Pharmacy department for one day and I learned about pharmacy technician from Pharmacy tech in Pharmacy department so, I decide to do research on both Pharmacist and on Pharmacy technician. It is really interesting that Pharmacist’s mean salary is $116,500 and it can go up to $147,350. The Pharmacy tech that I shadowed told me a lot about Pharmacist and about pharmacy technician and it was great learning from her about both careers. I found it really interesting that how Pharmacist and pharmacist technician can work in the environment they like the most, they can work in hospital pharmacy or at other local pharmacy stores.
