Handout 1–3
Methods of Research
Research, systematic inquiry aimed at the discovery of new knowledge, is a central ingredient of the scientific method in psychology. It provides the key to understanding the degree to which hypotheses (and the theories behind them) are accurate. Just as we can apply different theories and hypotheses to explain the same phenomena, we can use a number of alternative methods to conduct research.
In this exercise, you will learn more about several methods of research that psychologists use to gain new knowledge about human behavior and ethical concerns psychologists face when conducting research.
1. You are conducting research on sex differences in e-mails. Your hypothesis is that men use more

Additionally, the habitat or environment cannot be controlled when making the observations.
3. You have decided to conduct a survey on whether a given political candidate will be popular with Latino voters.
* What is an advantage of the survey method?
The survey method can be advantageous to show that a political candidate would be popular amongst Latino votes because a larger population can be surveyed. This would show the attitudes of those surveyed. * What is a disadvantage of the survey method?
The disadvantage is that the participants may not accurately or honestly answer the questions for fear of having socially unacceptable attitudes.
4. You have decided to use the case study method to investigate a mother’s experience in raising a child with autism.
* What is an advantage of the case study method?
When studying a child with autism the case study method provides an in-depth and intense investigation of the individual and their behaviors. This provides a better understanding of the individual.
* What is a disadvantage of the case study method?
The disadvantage is that the child is unique and the results couldn’t be associated to the larger populations because the results may not apply to all or represent the larger population accurately.
5. When conducting research what are some of the ethical concerns that must be addressed?
Ethical concerns to be address
Discuss the role of observation in psychological research, drawing from examples from chapters 3, 6 and 8 of Investigating Psychology
This article is relevant to my own studies because in class we have touched on a few of the topics addressed in this article. Because the interventions that were used were successful in the study using social stories is something I can do to help students with autism who have a harder time with decision making and appropriate play. I want the best for my students in my class so if needed I will go the extra mile to help them succeed. The social stories seemed to be used as a guide to help the children make the right choice. Social stories could be used in different areas that some children might have needs in. The stories are made up of visual pictures to help students understand what is being said and also the main character is someone the
For the purpose of this assignment I have chosen to look at Autism as a special need. I have chosen this special need because it is one that is very close to my heart. I know two little boys in particular who are both on the autism spectrum and therefore it is a matter I’ve always wanted to understand in greater detail. Throughout this assignment I will demonstrate an understanding of key areas and concepts in relation to signs, symptoms, diagnosis and prognosis of Autism, I will then discuss the role played by the multidisciplinary team and supporting staff involved in this particular special need. I will also show the investigation I carried out as part of research and finally I will reference to policy,
The article starts out defining Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and the different behavior modifiers. Then, we are given the problem being studied and the questions that the study focuses on. The knowledge of the parents of children with autism spectrum disorder of methods of modifying behavior represents the foundation stone in dealing with these children and evaluate their behavior, and it contribute to the social reintegration of behavior, and help identify training needs of those methods when designing training programs, and thus lead to the effectiveness of training and invest optimally. This will reflect positively on children with autism spectrum disorder. This study attempted to answer the following questions: 1) What is the level of knowledge of the parents of children with autism spectrum disorder of methods of behavior modification? 2) What are the training needs of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder of methods for behavior modification? 3) Are there any statistically significant differences (α = 0.05) in the level of knowledge of the parents of children with autism spectrum disorder of methods for behavior modification attributed to variables: gender of the respondent, qualification of the parents? Age of the child with autism? The gender of a child with autism spectrum disorder? (Deeb)
Autistic children has a tendency to refrain from this research. They prefer to be alone without any proper social interaction in their own world. Researcher need to attract them to gain their attention to perform this study. Communication between the child and the researcher need to be mutual to gain a cooperation from the child to communicate. There should a trained teacher accompanying the child when the interview is conducted. This is because the child might not communicate easily. Basically, researcher will need an assistant to help attract the children to communicate. Likewise, the researcher should have the knowledge of approaching atypical kind of children which is autism to perform a valid interview session and observations. However,
To prepare for this project I had to analyze multiple situations to ensure I get the most information that would be beneficial to my project. In order to have a successful project, I needed both primary and secondary sources. For my primary sources, I decided to interview three different individuals to get the full perspective on how effect my project would be and what changes I could make. I interviewed a teacher who has worked with children with Autism, her perspective was important because it gave insight on how children with Autism work in the classroom. In addition, I interviewed a family member of a child with Autism. Her perspective was important because it factored in the family perspective of this project and what they believe is best for the child. Lastly, I interviewed a public school’s solicitor to gain a practical and legal sense of the effects of the project.
The way that this research relates to my study is that it demonstrates that children with autism need parental involvement. From the study Kasari et al. (2006) found out that the children who were in the playgroup with their mother showed more interaction and play compared to the control group. This study shows that parental involvement in autistic
According to Pew Research Center, in 2010, 1,375 Latinos were surveyed to see who voted for Democrats or Republicans. The population size for the survey was 1375, with a sample size of 601, and a minimum sample size of 245, a confidence level of 95% with a confidence interval of 3%. This article shows multiple surveys: of voter preference for congress, the motivation for voting, the concern for Hispanics, top issues among Latino voters. As of 2010, the Democrats had most of the Latino votes at 65% while the Republican had 22% of the Latino votes. 32% of the Latino voters have thought “quite a lot “about the Novembers elections while 51% of Latinos said they were certain that they will vote in the Novembers elections. During the presidency of Obama, 51% of Latinos felt that his policies did not influence them while 26% said they had been helpful to Latinos and 13% said the policies were harmful (Lopez, 2010). The three top concerns for the Latino voters are Education, Jobs, and Healthcare. 58% of Latinos are concerned about Education, 54% are concerned Jobs and 51% are concerned about Healthcare. Latinos are the
2. Discuss the ethical and methodological issues associated with conducting psychological research via the internet.
My initial interest in special education seamlessly developed from a strong desire to serve my community, evolving through my work as a Behavior Interventionist. I recall my first session with a six-year-old boy diagnosed with classical autism. Developmentally, there was an impairment in social interaction, and profound lack of spoken language attempting communicate through gestures. As my first student, he definitely brought new challenges, but the momentum he was gaining through our services was completely fascinating. Our commitment to continually build upon new skills vitalized my purpose to serve this community through Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) with unrelenting zeal.
The chapter begins with a story relating to the absolutes of other sciences versus the abstract precepts addressed by psychological research. Determining how to define and measure behaviors and the mind is a
This study will use a qualitative method and case study similar to Hartas’ (2008) study of the effects of parental involvement on students with Autism. Parents will participate in semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and classroom observations to determine what motivates them to be involved.
To illustrate why applied behavioral analysis is an effective treatment approach to individuals with autism
Psychologists use a variety of research methods in psychological investigations which help try to discover facts and data by using systematic and objective methods of investigation to support their psychological theory. Data can be collected in two forms; quantitative (in the form of numbers e.g. time) and qualitative (in a descriptive form e.g. verbal reports about how participants feel). In experimental investigations, the independent variable (IV) and dependant variable (DV) are investigated by changing the IV and observing the effects it might have on the DV. These experimental methods are usually carried out in the laboratory however, experiments can also be conducted outside the laboratory, such as field experiments and quasi experiments, whether naturalistic or controlled, methods are used by psychologists to reach conclusions on their hypothesis.
There were five children who were diagnosed with autism, 25 of their typically developing peers, and 5 teachers who participated. The five children with autism lacked social and interaction skills. These participants varied in ages and had distinct characteristics. The first participant named Alex
