Picasso's Accomplishments

Pablo Picasso arrived in Paris in the year 1900 at the age of just 19, and within a few years he became a well-known artist and a dominating figure in the world of modern art movement. The one piece of art that he produced in 1906 through 1907 was the Les Demoiselles d’Avignon and would change the word of art forever. This became the piece art that helped launch Cubism and a whole new artistic expression. Because of this art and many other, Pablo Picasso has become one of the most important figure of 20th century, in terms of art, and art movements that occurred over this period. He paints not what he sees, but what he feels, what he tells himself about what he has seen.” Picasso’s passion for art started at a young age, getting his passion for art from his father. Pablo Picasso is known for the innovative techniques he introduced to the art world. Each being influenced from his life around him, to modifications in the colors he utilized, or transitioning to an unorthodox style of painting, and even practicing printmaking.

While he already had a considerable following by the middle of 1906, Picasso enjoyed further success with his paintings of massive over-sized nude women, monumental sculptural figures that recalled the work of Paul Gauguin and showed his interest in primitive (African, Micronesian, Native American) art. He began exhibiting his work in the galleries of Berthe Weill (1865–1951) and Ambroise Vollard, (1866–1939) quickly gaining a growing reputation and a following amongst the artistic community of Montparnasse.

Pablo Picasso was born in Málaga, Spain, on October 25th, 1881. In his life, he had many jobs: poet, stage designer, ceramicist, printmaker, sculptor, and most famously, a painter. Many even consider him to be one of the most influential Spanish artists of the twentieth century. One reason for this is his ability to change artistic styles when painting. This led to varied works of art whenever he worked. He did this until the turn of the 20th century, when moved to Paris, France to open his own studio. Here, he felt lonely and depressed, and it definitely showed in his paintings of poverty, anger, and isolation. After 1905, he had mostly overcome this depression and most of his paintings showed warm colors such as red and pink. However, this would not last. Picasso, like many artists, went through a number of different phase throughout his art career. One of Picasso must daunting periods was throughout the early 1900s, after the death of his friend Carlos Casagemas. During this period his paintings were dark and filled with despair, in memory of his friend. After 1901, Picasso entered one of his most famous phase, the Blue Period. During this period Picasso found inspiration in Spain and painted only in blue and green tints. Picasso subjects during this phase, were also more distressing, such as prostitutes and beggars. It was later became known that ever since his friend’s death, Picasso was severely depressed and even as he enter more colorful phase his depression still lingered. A good friend of his named Casagemos committed suicide, which made Picasso very depressed. He showed his emotions through his work by painting mostly in shades of blue. This is known as his blue period, where all his subjects dealt with poverty, depression, and human struggle. Picasso was a Spanish artist and got his fame during and after World War II. He began to get popularity in Spain, and eventually created works surrounding the Spanish Civil War that would soon start. His works would often depict the war and the suffering it caused. However, following the war and the nationalist victory, most of Picasso’s works were banned and he was forced to flee to France. There, he spent the rest of his life, creating many new masterpieces. These included his renditions of Las Meninas.
