Plagiarism In College Students

Arizona State University (ASU) is dealing with a case of plagiarism, Presenting someone else’s words or ideas without acknowledging where those words and ideas were located, (Ann Raimes, 2013, pg 153) against one of its professors. This is the third time the professor has been accused of using others ideas as his own without citing his source. Should this professor have a job? Let’s take a look at the three accounts and decide if they were a misunderstanding or just plain plagiarism.

Plagiarism is something that is not hard for the person that plans ahead and takes credit for their hard work (Bethel University, 2013). I will not have any kind of hard time dealing with plagiarism. The only issues that I am concerned with is the format of my APA citing. I have been with Bethel University for almost a full two years now and it is different with every class that I attend. Every professor has a certain method or style that they prefer to be used in their online classroom. Usually the first Discussion post that I complete in any given course is when I find out exactly what to expect. Although I don't consider it to be "plagiarism", if it is not cited correctly, technically it is.

Because students often are confused about what is and is not plagiarism, I have prepared this handout to help you understand what is acceptable. I have really enjoyed this class. Even though a lot of the work we did wasn't that new to me. I really enjoyed using the citation assignments. I believe it is really important to be able to cite your sources right and often. Just to be on the safe side. Plagiarism is one of those seven deadly college sins that you cant take back. What I found challenging was the mind mapping or webbing. It sounds so simple to do, but some how I still have trouble doing it. Well I have trouble with it when its part of an assignment. If its just idea farming then I'm not sure if its an issue. But I didn't do very well on that assignment. One thing that I will have to remember is to not always use the first thing I find when I run a search on the internet.

Plagiarism is when someone takes credit for someone else work. It could be anything from copying and pasting an article or part of an article and using it for a paper or assignment to buying a pre-written paper online. It could also be as simply as copying someone's answers from a test.

It really is easy for us students to plagiarize without thinking anything of it. Plagiarizing is a simple term that acts like an umbrella over several forms. Plagiarizing is taking ideas from another person without giving proper credit whether it written or spoken. It can be from a couple words to a whole book. Harvard Guide to Using Sources had a list of ways to avoid plagiarizing. A few techniques that are listed are citing sources, paying attention to how we word our sentences, keeping what we written and the sources we used repeatedly, and using sources correctly. Student think nothing of plagiarizing because we are not expecting for teachers to put every sentence into google and see what comes up, or we think that it not a big problem

Plagiarism is using another person’s writing without source, which is a serious crime. That is why every college has policies about plagiarism. These policies have the similar punishments, such as giving failure, suspension, and expulsion, depending on the number of times a student plagiarized. However, the colleges also have different punishments. For example, Centennial College has a more detailed policy than George Brown College. On the other hand, George Brown College’s policy is stronger than Centennial College as there are no warnings.

Avoiding plagiarism is very important in college if you do not want to receive an F in the course. I believe that paraphrasing will be the most difficult one to avoid. Although students don’t try to plagiarize it happens unintentionally. “To summarize or paraphrase, put the author’s ideas completely into your owns instead of creating some odd combination of the text’s original wording and your own” (Ridley, 2017, p. 9). I also believe direct quotes would be a bit difficult because some people forgot to add quotations around direct quotes.
