Plagiarism is the use of intellectual material of another individual or institution without acknowledging the source. Two examples of this are copying directly passages or ideas into papers or homework without acknowledgment of the source or paraphrasing ideas, views, insights, or opinions from the work of another without acknowledgment.

Plagiarism is not just limited to taking information from resources without citations. According to Theresa Ireton, an assistant professor of writing in Centralia College, Washington, there are also subcategories of plagiarism in writing, such as plagiarism of structure, authorship, and plagiarism of self [4]. It is considered a plagiarism of structure when an imitator is paraphrasing by having different word choices than the original content. Plagiarism of authorship constitutes buying and turning in duplicate copy of another person’s work without any modifications whatsoever. Plagiarism of self is when an individual tries to utilize previously completed work as a resubmission for a different assignment. Even though the previous assignment is fully original content from an individual, it still constitutes as cheating due to an unfair advantage.

In the article, “Plagiarism Lines Blur for Students in Digital Age” written by author Trip Gabriel, there are multiple views on the aspects of plagiarism. Some people refuse to take plagiarism seriously, having a strong educational background as foundation as well as respect for other individuals work. Plagiarism is a serious offense and often considered a form of theft. Consequences for plagiarism can vary depending upon the campus, but can lead up to expulsion. Plagiarism commonly known as taking pieces of ideas or words and phrases from someone without giving credit.

I decided to interview a friend of mine who just started her second year of teaching. She works for a Middle School in Westchester County, teaching 6th and 7th grade math. I asked her a series of questions about her whole experience on becoming a teacher. I was relieved to hear what her first few days were like being a new teacher, because that could be nerve racking for any new teacher. She explained to me that she was shocked on her first few days, and overwhelmed with the respect she immediately received from her students. They greet her in the hallway, and thank her as they leave class. I could just imagine how good that would feel to get that reaction from your students. When I asked her why she decided to teach the grade that she is in, she explained to me that she chose to do middle school because it is a crucial time for development in an adolescents life, and also a challenging time.

Where does plagiarism starts and where does it end? What comes to my mind first is: Are our thoughts authentic? It is hard to answer by yes or no to that question. We have been raised by our parents, so whether we like it or not, the ideas that we have or our behaviors are merely similar to them. By being our only example during our childhood, we are in a sense shaped to think as them. It is only when we are older that we start to make our own opinion. But the truth is we don’t bring new thoughts, we only figure out a way to distinguish ourselves from them. If I am in a political debate and someone asks me a question, my answer would be exactly the one that I have heard my mother saying. Is this considered as plagiarism? Whoever did not respect the “intellectual property” and stole someone’s idea without giving any credit is punished by the law. Those are the barriers made by our society to fight against plagiarism. For instance, Stanford University sees plagiarism as the "use, without giving reasonable and appropriate credit to or acknowledging the author or source, of another person's original work, whether such work is made up of code, formulas, ideas, language, research, strategies, writing or other form.” Yale views plagiarism as the "use of another's work, words, or ideas without attribution.” Princeton perceives plagiarism

Plagiarism is a concern for academic honesty and personal integrity. When I was an undergrad in the late 1980’s, repositories of papers were kept in an academic department to aid in plagiarism detection. Plagiarism was evaluated by a Professor recognizing particular work and being forced to ask a student for validity of original thought. Today there are tools students can use to avoid plagiarism (Turn It In, 2014). For this course we will submit our writings to an internet site called Turn It In to avoid plagiarism.

2. If you procrastinate or think this course is going to be easy because we do not meet face-to-face, what should you consider doing?

Plagiarism is not a crime, but it is a moral offence. Plagiarism is the act of copying someone else’s original idea and passing it as one’s own work. While each university has different policy and regulations against plagiarism some examples of it are: Direct copying from original sources, copying material and making slight changes to it and paraphrasing. Plagiarism in essay writing is cheating, and students who use someone else’s intellectual property without permission, or having someone else do their essay work are breaking the educational institution regulations. These practices of cheating create lack of creativity, inability to gain new knowledge and disrespect towards the professor and the original author.

We should be really careful in not falling into the temptation of doing any wrong that at the end is going to dramatically change our future. Many reasons and factors are attributed for the use of plagiarism and could be cultural, historical, linguistic, environmental and educational background. Plagiarism is a form of an academic dishonesty, academic misconduct, and a digital cheating. It is declared to be an unacceptable legal act and institutional regulations. And universities, schools, and instructors do not only need to decrease plagiarism, but they must also affect positively on students writings, increase the understanding of how to use digital technology to facilitate their academic writing.

Things I’ve learned from the video is that when students plagiarism the main reason is because they have ran out of time. Plagiarism usually occurs internally and unintentionally. Waiting till the last minute, you have no idea how and what you should do, so you feel looking up the answer would best benefit you. You’re rushing through the assignment, just worried about getting it done, you don’t think to cite. Without citing you’re taking credit from another person’s work. When using a quote or summarizing something, you have to give credit and when you’re in a rush you don’t think to give it where it’s due. It may not seem like such a big deal, but it really is. Plagiarizing someone else’s work can get you a zero or worse kicked out the class

Plagiarism is something that almost anyone can do without realizing they have done it. When a person takes the work of someone else or the words of someone else without giving proper credit they are plagiarizing. The internet is a source that we all use for things like pictures, music, and information. What most people don’t realize is that if you don’t have permission to use these items and fail to cite where it came from, then that’s considered plagiarizing (iParadigms, LLC, 2014).
