I had a good understanding of what plagiarism was prior to watching the video, but it is always good to have information reinforced for myself and others. I do not think all students understand there can be a fine line when deciphering between your words and ideas versus another author’s words/ideas, so it is better to cite the source if you have any doubt that it could be seen as plagiarism. Here is a short video on plagiarism. This video discusses: what plagiarism is, when citations are needed and tips to avoid plagiarizing. It also gives additional websites to get more information on APA, MLA and plagiarizing.
Plagiarism is bad. You don’t need to be stealing nobody else’s work and claiming it as your own. You go out and read dang books, articles, web pages, songs, emails, etc. and don’t cite or just steal their work altogether. You got to be a special kind of person to want to do this kind of stuff. Citing info that you read is as easy as “giving credit and provide your audience with information on how to find the original source” (“Plagiarism”). Don’t copy and paste your own work and not cite yourself. Sure, you don’t have to explain common knowledge things and all, but how am I to know how Billy Joe, from Arkansas, said in the summer of 1989.
These students were taught a life lesson, something that they will never do again. Being taught, the correct way, at a young age will solve many of the problems that we have today. Becoming aware of the consequences that this could lead to would be worth the extra time citing a document, or writing your own paper. Taking someone’s words or writing could lead to loss of job/school, fines, and so much more. To avoid these problems, a simple citation will help anyone become aware that you did give credit to the author. Jim Carnett published an article in the Los Angeles Times stating that he had tried to submit a column to an editor but they sent it back because it contained plagiarised material. Carnett said, “I lifted a portion of one of my columns and inserted it in the Daily Pilot piece without attribution.” He hadn’t cited his own work and now what he did was plagiarism. To Carnett, this was a total accident, but this shows that you should cite any information that you use. Although there are arguments that there is no such thing as plagiarism, “If a novelist uses a non-fiction book for research, how is that stealing? Non-fiction promises facts, there is no copyright in facts, ergo no stealing…” (Independent.co.uk) it is always best to give credit to the source that you received the information from; thus not having a chance of plagiarism.
The librarian visited our class to do a presentation regarding the APA Citation Style and Plagiarism. I have learned a lot more information on how to avoid plagiarism and how to cite it appropriately. APA offers guidelines for overall paper layout, citations, abstract, style, and references. Students are often asked to adhere to the APA guidelines when writing papers, research essays, and reports. Understanding and following the rules of APA can assist a student in writing a well-formatted and professional looking academic paper.
To avoid plagiarism, make sure to cite your sources properly with in-text citations as well as a works-cited page.
Plagiarism is the use of another person’s idea, view, suggestion or insight without recognizing them by proper citation or misrepresenting your own work.(Walden University, 2016). It is not done purposefully most of the time that why the Walden has to assist student to avoid this pitfall that will affect their academic integrity. APA format is used to avoid plagiarism. There is a saying in my place that says ignorance is not an excuse. We are provided with different resources to help with this damming threat and with lots of practice it will get better.
Things I’ve learned from the video is that when students plagiarism the main reason is because they have ran out of time. Plagiarism usually occurs internally and unintentionally. Waiting till the last minute, you have no idea how and what you should do, so you feel looking up the answer would best benefit you. You’re rushing through the assignment, just worried about getting it done, you don’t think to cite. Without citing you’re taking credit from another person’s work. When using a quote or summarizing something, you have to give credit and when you’re in a rush you don’t think to give it where it’s due. It may not seem like such a big deal, but it really is. Plagiarizing someone else’s work can get you a zero or worse kicked out the class
The first one is presentation, when writing an APA paper you should want to make sure you have an excellent presentation. To have an excellent presentation, your paper needs to be in order for your reader or readers to be able to read it. Always use “Times New Roman” and make sure you use twelve font. Also, make sure you double space your paper as well. The second one is never plagiarism someone’s writing always use your own brain and thoughts. If you use someone’s work or quote someone, please be sure to give them credit. For an example, I am a prek teaching assistant and the teacher I work with would always take credit for my ideas and that made me mad. Just imagine how the author would feel if you plagiarized their work. The third tip is having good organization skills and a plan for writing your paper. Last, make sure you always proofread your work and read it out loud to
Plagiarism is copying other people’s ideas. It’s like if Carl goes online to look up lizards; And finds a fact filled article and copies it to make it look like his work. That is plagiarism. You are not allowed to plagiarize in school or at work. You could get punished or fired. Also people can figure out if you are plagiarizing. In conclusion never plagiarize or commit plagiarism.
In both my personal, professional life I have dealt with the issue of plagiary. As a practitioner I’ve seen the gamut with students. The practice of representing ideas falsely happens often and unintentionally. If writing represents symbolic thought I would be hard pressed to apprirpitatley name and give credit to where all of my thoughts originated. However I have learned to separate the authors voice from my own through the use of citation.
In order to have good written communication one must be a scholarly writer. A scholarly writer involves using APA format, avoiding plagiarism and being free from grammatically errors. Scholarly writing involves practice and the use of writing resources. The APA book 6th edition, There are online resources available for grammar and plagiarism such as Grammerly and SAfeAssing. While I do not have experience with using Safeassing, I have used Turnit In programming for detecting plagiarism in my writing. The technique use for prarpharizing is quoting my paragraphs. And giving credit to the cutting source.
Ways to avoid plagiarism is by giving credit for words, paraphrases and ideas that come from another persons work. It can also be avoided by putting quotation marks around words that come form a source and then give the source. Journalist can avoid plagiarism by acknowledging material that has been borrowed and giving the readers the information needed to find the source. Another way it can be avoided is by noting an idea that was taken from someone’s work.
Plagiarism is basically taking the credit for someone’s work, in other words cheating and stealing someone else’s hard work. It is important to cite because it proves the amount of research you have done and it makes your research a lot stronger because it gives support from credible sources. What I have learned from this course and from my past experience is that if I am going to use someone else’s work, I have to cite the work and give credit to its creator. In order to avoid plagiarism, I will rewrite anything that needs to be cited properly and I will reread everything in order to make sure that all quotes and work from another individuals are properly cited and paraphrased with its reference. Also, I will use online sites, such as the
The type of plagiarism that is the hardest for me to avoid is paraphrasing. “Paraphrasing allows you to put the author’s ideas into your own words” (Bethel University, 2015). I find myself using more of the author’s words because I am afraid that I will change the meaning if I use my own. The best way for me to avoid this type of plagiarism is to simply compare what I write to the original and to be sure that I am not summarizing the information. The difference between writing a summary and paraphrasing is the amount of detail that is included; a paraphrase is not as concise as a summary (Bethel University, 2014).
What is plagiarism? Plagiarism is when you represent someone's work as your own. First of all, when do you give credit original owner? Second of all, When do you not need to give credit? Third of all why do people plagiarize, in your opinion?
The word plagiarism is mentioned in all kinds of settings. Professors and teachers will tell students that plagiarism is not tolerated. Bosses and managers will tell their employees that stealing others’ work is prohibited. People will often suffer many consequences for plagiarising. But those large fines and repercussions can all be avoided if documentation is given for the information that was taken. Documentation can simply be including in-text citations and adding in a works cited. However, correctly and accurately citing sources depends on the type of paper. Documentation in a MLA paper will be different than in an APA paper. With this in mind, there are ways plagiarism can be avoided, and it’s important to
