Plagiarism: Revealing Someone Else's Work

Plagiarism is bad. You don’t need to be stealing nobody else’s work and claiming it as your own. You go out and read dang books, articles, web pages, songs, emails, etc. and don’t cite or just steal their work altogether. You got to be a special kind of person to want to do this kind of stuff. Citing info that you read is as easy as “giving credit and provide your audience with information on how to find the original source” (“Plagiarism”). Don’t copy and paste your own work and not cite yourself. Sure, you don’t have to explain common knowledge things and all, but how am I to know how Billy Joe, from Arkansas, said in the summer of 1989.

Plagiarism is defined as “the presentation of work for credit that is not [a writer’s] own” (Johanson, 2010, p. 267). The information obtained by a writer from another source should be cited in the text and referenced when paraphrasing or quoting another author’s material (APA, 2010). Student plagiarism can be avoided by using electronic resources or software to prevent unintentional plagiarism, educating students on how to properly cite and reference material in an academic writing, and providing information to students about the consequences of plagiarizing.

To avoid plagiarism, make sure to cite your sources properly with in-text citations as well as a works-cited page.

I should fix all of my mistakes; if they are not it is considered plagiarism and I will receive a zero on my paper. I may also fail the class and get an academic red flag report. Turning in an old essay I did from another class or using parts of an old exposition is still considered plagiarism and I will receive the same punishment. A warning is a chance so I should take full advantage and fix them. If I do not understand something I should ask questions and get the help I need. When writing a paper, I should not forget the work cited page, page numbers, and text citations. Three ways that I can use to avoid plagiarism are to quote, paraphrase and summarize. I should quote when there is a conclusion or opinion with credentials. Facts should not be quoted, but cited instead. I should summarize so I can input ideas together. Building on paragraphs and explaining details is one example of summarizing. Lastly, paraphrasing should not be rearranged, but should be elaborated on certain ideas and explain how they all fit

Plagiarism is passing off someone else’s words or ideas as your own without giving them credit for it. For example, on August 28th, 1963 Martin Luther King (Jr.) made one of the most historic speeches in American history, “I Have a Dream”. When I am writing a paper about Mr. King’s speech and are directly quoting or paraphrasing his words, I must correctly cite or quote his words so that the reader knows that the information is not my own words. The correct way to avoid plagiarism is to cite the work like the example shown below. King, Jr.’s (1963) speech stated the following:

There is a saying in my place that says ignorance is not an excuse. We are provided with different resources to help with this damming threat and with lots of practice it will get better.

In such a cases, students usually do very little research on the particular subject and simply copy information from internet, make slight changes to the words and present it as own work. This is also considered serious plagiarism because the information taken has not been quoted and the source has not been cited. Brian Martin argues that a lot of students are victims of this type of plagiarism because the students are unaware of the correct method of referencing and are unaware of their educational institution policy on paraphrasing, therefore it is essential students to become familiar with the university rules regarding paraphrasing and always put quotation marks and cite the source of information.

Plagiarism is using someone else’s work, words, production, researches and ideas without the approval or the acknowledgment of the writer or producer, and claiming the credit for himself. Many reasons and factors are attributed for the use of plagiarism and could be cultural, historical, linguistic, environmental and educational background. Plagiarism is a form of an academic dishonesty, academic misconduct, and a digital cheating. It is declared to be an unacceptable legal act and institutional regulations. And universities, schools, and instructors do not only need to decrease plagiarism, but they must also affect positively on students writings, increase the understanding of how to use digital technology to facilitate their academic writing.

To plagiarize is to use the work of another and represent it as your own work. The overall concept is simple. Do not copy the work of another and use it as your own. It is commonly understood, although not always adhered to, that a student should not have another write their paper nor should they purchase a pre-written paper and turn it in with their name on it. Many students can lack an understanding of the more subtle aspects of plagiarism though. A common misconception is using the work of another and simply rephrasing it or using quotes around the portion of the work of another but not citing that source. In school and work place, plagiarism is terrible as it does not give the original author recognition for their work, and it prevents the individuals from learning. Therefore, cite is important for the reasons that it help to support student arguments and give their work an accurate and protect student against plagiarism.

Plagiarism is using information that is obtained from another source without giving credit to that source. This can mean using the exact words of another writer, or it can mean taking the ideas of another writer and putting them into your own words. This is known as paraphrasing. In both situations, students should make sure they indicate the name of the writer and the location of the article they found it in. If students do not include this information, it is a form of stealing. The concept of stealing something that is intellectual property may be unusual for some students to understand at first, but it is really quite simple. The ideas and words that someone else has taken the time to compose belong to that person. To use those ideas and words without giving credit to that person is like stealing that writer's work. That is why it is important to let your reader know where you got the original idea from. It is not difficult for students to avoid plagiarism as long as they understand what the concept means. Once they understand what it means, they can learn how to avoid it in the ways this paper will show.

In colloquial language plagiarism is the concept of stealing someone’s piece of work or someone’s idea. It is clear that plagiarising is unjust and immoral, however now a days it is becoming more difficult to come up with original ideas as the media allows students to have open access to all information and the producer or author must be very careful to not use somebody else’s work unintentionally and claim it as theirs.
