Plagiarism is basically taking the credit for someone’s work, in other words cheating and stealing someone else’s hard work. It is important to cite because it proves the amount of research you have done and it makes your research a lot stronger because it gives support from credible sources. What I have learned from this course and from my past experience is that if I am going to use someone else’s work, I have to cite the work and give credit to its creator. In order to avoid plagiarism, I will rewrite anything that needs to be cited properly and I will reread everything in order to make sure that all quotes and work from another individuals are properly cited and paraphrased with its reference. Plagiarism is bad. You don’t need to be stealing nobody else’s work and claiming it as your own. You go out and read dang books, articles, web pages, songs, emails, etc. and don’t cite or just steal their work altogether. You got to be a special kind of person to want to do this kind of stuff. Citing info that you read is as easy as “giving credit and provide your audience with information on how to find the original source” (“Plagiarism”). Don’t copy and paste your own work and not cite yourself. I should fix all of my mistakes; if they are not it is considered plagiarism and I will receive a zero on my paper. I may also fail the class and get an academic red flag report. Turning in an old essay I did from another class or using parts of an old exposition is still considered plagiarism and I will receive the same punishment. A warning is a chance so I should take full advantage and fix them. If I do not understand something I should ask questions and get the help I need. When writing a paper, I should not forget the work cited page, page numbers, and text citations. Three ways that I can use to avoid plagiarism are to quote, paraphrase and summarize. I should quote when there is a conclusion or opinion with credentials. Facts should not be quoted, but cited instead. I should summarize so I can input ideas together. Building on paragraphs and explaining details is one example of summarizing. Lastly, paraphrasing should not be rearranged, but should be elaborated on certain ideas and explain how they all fit
Plagiarism is passing off someone else’s words or ideas as your own without giving them credit for it. For example, on August 28th, 1963 Martin Luther King (Jr.) made one of the most historic speeches in American history, “I Have a Dream”. When I am writing a paper about Mr. King’s speech and are directly quoting or paraphrasing his words, I must correctly cite or quote his words so that the reader knows that the information is not my own words. It is commonly understood, although not always adhered to, that a student should not have another write their paper nor should they purchase a pre-written paper and turn it in with their name on it.
