The initial impression one makes on his or her classmates during Plebe Summer often carries with them throughout their time at the Academy. In many ways, it is unfortunate because people are not given a second chance to prove their worth, but in other cases, flaws in character and work ethic are observed and they are accurate from the first impression. One of my classmates, I will call him Hank to keep his identity anonymous, had a tough time during the summer. He would always be the last one to everything and he never knew his rates; it seemed as if he did not put in any effort. As a result, when the academic year started, I seemed to always notice the bad things Hank did. For example, he slept through classes we shared, and he got a few
He also does not always come to class on time (he is not always punctual).

“Freedom Summer”, a book by Bruce Watson, talks about that historic time of 1964 in Mississippi. He explains in detail about the events that went on. Even the most painful details from that summer he has you relive as he tells about them. The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee went to Mississippi to educate African Americans and help them vote. Watson talks about the murder of three innocent people while down there in Mississippi. Three people that were young and just helping African Americans be educated were murdered for helping. He uses many different quotes from those that were there or experienced what went on. All these to tell the story so important because it shaped American democracy. It made sure that African Americans had

In “How to Write a Memoir” William Zinsser gives very detailed and important advice to writers interested in writing a memoir. He gives the specific advice of “Be yourself,” “Speak Freely,” and “Think Small” (Zinsser, 2, 4, 6). These tips advise writers to not only think about what they want to say in their story but also how they want to tell their story. Many memoir authors choose to follow this advice and write their story using these points, but many do not. In the memoir “A Summer Life”, Gary Soto follows Zinsser’s writing advice through his use of writing from the point of view of a young child, speaking freely about his early life events, and writing about his life in small structure chapters.
We have observed two different short stories, one called “Examination Day” by Henry Slesar, and another called “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury. “Examination Day” is about how when a person becomes 12 years old they have to take an examination determining their intelligence. Anyone with an intelligence above the norm is considered unacceptable. Anyone smarter than the norm is eliminated. The story focuses on a very intelligent boy taking his Examination, and getting killed for being too smart. The story “All Summer in a Day” is about a colony on Venus that faces constant rain and the sun shining once every 7 years. The story focuses on a girl Margot, from earth who is harassed by the others on Venus since she remembers the sun being
The story of Summer, by David Updike, is set during that idyllic time in life when responsibility is the last word on anyone's mind. And yet, as with all human affairs, responsibility is an ever-present and ever-necessary aspect to life. What happens when the protagonist, Homer, loses his awareness of a certain personal responsibility to maintain self-control? Homer's actions increasingly make him act foolishly, internally and externally. Also, how does Homer return to a sense of sanity and responsibility? To a degree, I would say that he does.
A.P classes and colleges both require summer assignments prior to the school year. Considering the courses are difficult, colleges assign tasks over the summer in order for students to develop skills for the school year. This method is effective being the student can adapt to college standards. Because an A.P. course is taught similarly to a college one, they also assign summer work. Students abhor the fact of having to do summer assignments, although it helps overcome the obstacles or difficulties in the near future. For example, according to the author of the article, College Freshman Summer Reading, college summer assignments “help build a sense of community with the incoming class of students” (Lucier). Summer assignments constructs a student’s
In the short film All Summer In a Day, there is a classroom full of children on a planet very similar to Earth. This story is taking place in the future and on a very dismal planet. The sun only shines once a year and only for a couple hours. On this planet it rains all day, every day. All of the children flock together to see the sun when it shines but one kid in particular is very loving of the memory of the sun. All of the children are too young to remember the sunlight except for the one, Margot. Margot was born on Earth and is older than the other children so she remembers the sunlight very faintly. William is jealous that Margot can remember the sun being out and he cannot. Therefore william picks on Margot by bringing her hope down and
We had to work with each other the entire semester together, being dependent on each other for our grades. One group member, in the beginning was not pulling their weight and would be working on it until the last second or submit late. I decided to ask if the person needed help, or if there was something they were not getting. As it turned out, he was unclear on some instructions and wasn’t getting the material. So I decided to help him out and invite him to my study sessions, and either that or bringing it up to his attention that he needed to pick up the pace put us back on track.
The short story All Summer in A Day by ray Bradbury shows that if sharing life’s priceless moments with others means that it shows kindness, then that is the right thing to do. My three paragraphs will be talking about what the kids did to Margot, counter claims, and the kids regretting what they did. All Summer in a Day is about kids that live on Venus where the Sun only comes out every seven years. So when Margot claims she’s seen the Sun on Earth, the kids don’t believe her and lock her in a closet. She missed seeing the Sun and in the end the kids regretted what they did.
“Before the End of Summer” by Grant Moss Jr. is a short story about a little boy named Bennie who finds out his grandmother is going to die before the end of summer. As the weeks go by, he sees other people dying and eventually comes to terms with the truth. The author uses symbolism throughout the story, one example being Bennie himself. Bennie represents childhood innocence and immaturity and the transition from it. The symbolism helps prove the theme of the story, being that ‘In the darkest of times, we find our strength.’
