What is poetry? No I don’t mean putting a couple words together that rhyme. Rhyme scheme is only a component of what poetry is. I got this question asked before beginning the unit of poetry. I said-- “When I think about poetry I think of the flow of a river out into the ocean. The sounds and sight of this reminds me of poetry. The sounds that the river makes are relaxing and calm as they empty into a vast body of water. It’s like the mind of a poet emptying onto a piece of paper or a keyboard. The sight of the river flowing also reminds me of poetry. Some poems seem so calm as they empty into the ocean, so serene. That is what poetry is to me. The flow of thoughts that create a piece of art that is called a poem. Just as the flow of a calm river that creates another piece of art, called an ocean.”
After having my own chance to write my own poem, and also having to recite another poet’s poem, my perspective changed a bit on the whole concept of poetry. Now if someone were to ask me what poetry is and what it meant I would say poetry is a way to express ones self. Writing a poem is another way of showing whom you are and how you feel to people who don’t know you, or people who don’t know you well enough. It’s also a way to relax and release some stress. Just like athletes go to the gym when they need to relieve some stress, writers grab their notebook and a pencil. Poetry is like picking out what clothes you want to wear in the morning. You can either decide to be yourself
What is poetry? Is poetry about your feelings? Is poetry meant for you to deliberate or read between the lines? Elizabeth Alexander, a black educator that teaches poetry, believes that poetry is where you are your true self and finding yourself. In 2005, she published one of her poems called “Ars Poetica #100: I Believe.” She constructed the poem to speak to her students about her meaning of poetry. Poetry causes various emotions, various content, and based on various forms of realities.
Poetry is considered to be a representational text in which one explores ideas by using symbols. Poetry can be interpreted many different ways and is even harder to interpret when the original author has come and gone. Poetry is an incredible form of literature because the way it has the ability to use the reader as part of its own power. In other words, poetry uses the feelings and past experiences of the reader to interpret things differently from one to another, sometimes not even by choice of the author. Two famous poets come to mind to anybody who has ever been in an English class, Robert Frost and E.E. Cummings. Both of these poets have had numerous famous pieces due to the fact that they both
Poems are like puzzles. The structure of it looks easy and super short to read. But it contains a great deal of meaning and the more you dig in, the more questions you get. And eventually, you get puzzled in between all the deep answers, trying to figure out which one is the part of the puzzle, and which one is not.
I would have to say, how a poem becomes a poem is by how it affects the reader emotionally. Poems use word and emotion in a sense to draw pictures in the readers minds. They tell a story that mirrors an event that the writer may have experienced.
If you have ever read a book or listened to music, you have probably experienced poetry. Poetry is a literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm. There are many types of poetry and each has its own effect on the words. There are over fifty types of poetry. Poetry is categorized by the number of lines in the poem, the words in the poem, whether it rhymes or not, and what it is about. Some types of poetry examples include haiku, free verse, sonnets, and name poems, although there are many more types as well (Oxford living dictionaries ).People usually use the types of poetry they like best. I will tell you a little bit about a few types of poetry that are my favorite.
Poetry isn 't just those long sonnets you had to analyze in high school. It’s a verse, almost like the author is talking directly to you, telling you their story. Emotion pours out of poetry, just as if you were pouring water into a glass. It may get a bad reputation because of the somewhat uninteresting Shakespearean poems, where the language is difficult to understand and difficult to enjoy. Poetry is broad, and can be almost anything rhythmic. There is no topic poetry has to follow. There are no guidelines for poetry. Its just creativity pouring out of the author.
Poetry is an art style that is used to tell a story about something important about oneself, or something going on in the world. It changes as the world changes, because at one point poetry mainly consisted of poems with a story that had a deeper meaning. Then as time changed poetry took on many new forms, such as hip hop and rap. Poetry, whether it be rap or poems seemed to have a big boost during times of prejudice and racism. Two big poets known as Kendrick Lamar and Maya Angelou during their times have been very successful in bringing light to these situations with their poetry.
Poetry is not a set of rules in a secret language. It’s an outlet for the poet to explore thought and feelings that would otherwise be indescribable. It’s my outlet to process how I really feel when I think I feel numb or “fine.” I find I agree with Gregory Orr when he says this in his interview with NPR, “When I write a poem, I process experience. I take what's inside me — the raw, chaotic material of feeling or memory — and translate it into words and then shape those words into the rhythmical language we call a poem. This process brings me a kind of wild joy. Before I was powerless and passive in the face of
When you write poetry you can get the chance to sort through your thoughts with yourself. You have the opportunity to analyze your emotions
When reading poetry, many will notice that certain words seem to be draw together. When read aloud this becomes even more apparent. The poet does this purposely to help the poem flow in the way that the poet wants it to. Whether it be jagged and full of pauses to match an uneven or harsh theme, or smooth and flowy to match a theme that is easier to grasp. Poetry is a special type of writing that can appeal to almost any and everything that one may feel. Poets have many different ways of enhancing the meaning of the poem through the sound of the poem.
Charles R. Smith conveys his idea as to what a poet is about so beautifully. While listening to him, I visualized his words. I created pictures in my imagination, his words were relaxing. I have loved poetry for as long as I can remember. I grew up listening to all kinds of music which is a form of poetry. I remember living at home with my parents and on Sunday mornings as they were making breakfast, they would play the Sunday morning classics with Hal Jackson on the radio. At the time, I dreaded the music they listened to. “Oh no, not again Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, The Temptations, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes the list went on and on. Regardless to how I felt about it, I listened – I listened to every word, every note the singer belted out. These musicians shaped my parents, brought back childhood memories for them. This
Poetry is essential in today 's literary world. Poetry is used to express any feeling the poet could possibly think to portray. Similes and metaphors can take two unlike objects, such as a potato and cinderblock, and if done the correct way use them to describe how Abraham Lincoln dealt with scoundrels. Poetry is beautiful. One of the best genres in poetry, let alone a great literary movement is Romanticism or the post-enlightenment Romantics.
Poetry is used to evoke a response from the reader, whether it be emotional or physical. The poet is using the poetry to express his/her emotions or to explain an event that happened in their life, which triggers the specific emotions in the reader due to the reader being able to relate to the poet’s experience, which can leave a lasting effect on the reader that the reader can associate with.
