My group and I decides to create a sculpture that memorialized the deaths of Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Alton Sterling, Philando Castille, and Mike Brown, six black men who were unjustly murdered by police officers. Over the years, police brutality has proven to be a major issue yet America tries to hide or defend such incidents. Our sculpture strives to do the exact opposite.
I find police brutality to be a meaningful subject because I am half African American and realize that while I may be light skinned, my future son or husband could easily be gunned down over false presumptions. All of these places represented those in which various police brutality victims were killed, for example, twelve year old Tamir Rice was killed outside of recreation center, so we shot his photo on a basketball court. Choosing sites that mirror actual crime scenes helped remind the viewer of our sculpture that such incidents are reality. I was the one who proposed a police brutality theme and was a major component to the creation of our idea. I wanted to honor specific victims of police brutality and suggested that we model our sculpture after their crime scenes. Mamadou helped me alot in developing the roots of our project as well. As for the creation of the sculptures, I specifically picked or each victim and the objects to represent them, with the help of Tani. I outlined each body and placed the object that represented each victim around the outline. I also created the slideshow and picked out the song, Be Free, by J.cole, to further enhance our theme.
