Police canine dogs are rapidly becoming a major part of the criminal justice police force. You may ask yourself why are they becoming such a large part of the operation. This spike in the use of canine police dogs is the result of many different things. Three of them being the fact that they can smell extremely well. They also can replace a police officer from having to enter a hostile location. Finally dogs are extremely efficient trackers. This is why i believe dogs are a major asset to the police force and are inexpendable to the force.
Dogs can smell very well. At first they tested dogs and their ability to smell a few particles per million, then billion and even trillion and the dog was able to smell the particles and even track the sent.
They have been trained to search for people, bombs, and even drugs. The dogs go through extensive training about once a week and know what to look for with their noses...”A K9 officer and his or her dog, should undergo lessons in maintaining the police dog normative once a week. A K9 handler and a police dog improve their work per Shutzhund dog training, tracking training, bomb detection, and K9 tactics. We simulate different situations that may pop up during serious police work, using automobiles, a garage, sport , elementary schools, shopping centers, etc ("Master Dog Training." Master Dog Training. N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Mar. 2017.) They start undergoing this process when they are puppies, so they can “search” for these things
In the article “Through the Nose” by Frances Killea it talks about the way that dogs can learn to smell in many diffrent ways. In the article it tells about the many diffrent ways that a dog uses his sence of smell. For example, a dog will use a smell to tell who is their enemy or who their owner is and it can also tell the moods of other dogs through a smell. A dogs smelling receptors are a lot more sensitive than a humans so they can smell many more kinds of smells. Some dogs are used to help try to find peole when they went missing and on search and rescue missions, so if a dog owner went out for a walk and dissapeared then his dog would be able to help find him through many diffrent methods.
This case established the legal precedent for using police dogs, concluding that “[t]he government’s use of trained police dogs to investigate the home and its immediate surroundings is a “search” within the meaning of
K9s are used to find drugs.Police departments use them for that reason because k9s have about 200 million sense when humans have about 5 million so that’s why k9s are used for that purpose. Police dogs are also use to hunt down bad people.
(J. L. 2016, December 07) In today’s environment, police canines cannot be released to sic people. Those days are over, police dogs are now specialized and their handlers have to be responsible in the use of the
In This Article review I will be talking about how dogs can be used as a treatment for many medical conditions. In “How Dogs Can Help Veterans Overcome PTSD” by Chris Colin and “Therapy Dogs Help Students De-Stress” by Jen Christensen they both talk about how dogs can reduce stress and anxiety. “Medical Detection Dogs Train Animals To ‘sniff out’ breast cancer” and “ Pets may help reduce your risk of heart disease” both say that dogs can be used to detect medical conditions like cancer and heart disease. In “Can Dogs Sense Seizures and Heart Attacks?” and “Seizure-Alert Dogs Save Humans With Early Warnings” similarly they say that dogs are nowadays used to detect when a seizure is coming soon. Dogs can be used in many ways as an alternate treatment.
“The United States Police Canine Association became the largest and oldest active organization of its kind- “Ever striving for the betterment of all police K-9” – in August, 1971 when two existing associations, the Police K-9 Association and the United States K-9 Association, merged” (O’Heare). These two organizations now know that strength is in unity. From these groups merged different types of canine from basic patrol dog to the scent specialty dog and final to the great detector dog. Law Enforcement requires canines that have outstanding performance and physical/psychological health. Also, canines should be balanced in aggression behavior and social play. There is an abundance of good and bad to learn about
“In the wake of social, technological, environmental, economic and political changes, the future law enforcement executive must carefully consider if there is a future role for police K-9 programs. will the impact of technology eliminate the need for K-9 programs? Will the use of the police dog become more of a liability than an asset?” (Zwicky ii ) Modern law enforcement is not what it used to be 100 years ago. In most aspects everythings changed except a few things, one being Dogs, dogs have and will be an important aspect for years to come. Thoe there are those who say that dogs have no place in law enforcement, that they are unreliable and no longer needed for the job. In this paper i will argue the importance of dogs in law enforcement and that their use should not be underlooked, for these police dogs are used for everything from finding drugs and bombs to locating missing children and escaped convicts.
According to The Department of Justice estimates that nearly 25 dogs are killed by law enforcement every day in the United States. That equals 10,000 per year. Every circumstance and breed of animal is represented in these groups of murdered animals. Everything from German
“Dogs have an amazing sense of smell and it is one of their greatest sense. Their sense of smell is use for detecting cancer, criminals, and could be used to track lost people in the wilderness. Their own sense of smell can vary depending on the dog's age, breed and even gender. Dog's sense of smell is thought to be 10-100,000 times more powerful than the human nose.” (https://bncpet.com/blogs/news/37045185-what-makes-my-dog-like-that-how-smell-and-taste-work-in-the-canine-mind). You own two dogs and want to play with them. You decide to run around with them. You finally ask yourself, “Which dog has a better sense of smell?” A older and wiser dog or a young and smart dog. A older dog could have a better chance because of experience, but a younger dog has newer develop senses of smell.
It is widely known that police officers are given a substantial amount of latitude concerning vehicular searches while on patrol. Many officers make it a habit to ask citizens they pull over if it 's okay to search their cars, while others will only ask if they have reason to believe that a suspect is hiding something. Either way, what should you do if the police search your car without your permission, and without first obtaining a search warrant? Most people know that police officers need one of three things to search your car: permission, probable cause or a warrant. Unfortunately, an officer will obtain one of those three things if he is determined to execute a search, even if there is a possibility that it will later be thrown out in court. If permission is denied and they don 't have sufficient evidence for a warrant, just about anything can be used for probable cause. For example, let 's say that you 're pulled over for speeding, and when the police officer takes your license and registration, he notices that your eyes are red. This is a common side effect of marijuana use (and about a thousand other things), but he might decide that he wants to search your car, so he asks permission. If you don 't give it, but there is a large jacket tossed over the passenger seat of the car, he can use that jacket and your red eyes to generate probable cause. After all, you might be concealing an ounce of marijuana underneath the jacket, and he would have to search your car if he
“A dogs sense of smell sometimes out perform X-Rays and CT scans at detecting cancers at an early stage by simply smelling a persons breath or urine.” Everyone is able to breed a dog to function in many different ways and for many different reasons. Mow explains how this is possible through his short movie Science of dogs. “Because of intensive selective breeding by cross breeding different breeds for different distinctive types of physical appearances and behavioral attributes; you will soon create the dog you were looking for and it will also have a consistency of creating the same breed of dog by creating a new genetic code in the dogs DNA”. For example there is one breed of dog that has the best sense of smell in the entire world and they were created for one job and one job only. Klim Sulimov explains what dog this is and how it was formed on the Science of Dogs, “The Sulimov dog has the best sense of smell in the whole entire world, and they were successfully created to identify explosives, he bred a Jackal with a Lapland Herding Hound, a Reindeer Herding Hound, a Fox Terrier, and a Spitz. Creating a dog that is highly trainable dog and a superior snout”. All these hybrid breeds are so successful because of how the dogs DNA is formed. The discovery of deciphering the dog genome was discovered by the Researchers at the National Institutes of Health on The Science of Dogs “Every piece of DNA is made up of four different chemical components
Cute, fun, loving, cuddly, outgoing; these are only a few words to describe the animals that we have come to know and love as a part of our families. Dogs have been man’s best friend for hundreds of years and were the first animal to be domesticated because they are great as companions, highly intelligent, and were found to be very useful in human’s everyday lives. Even though they made excellent house pets they were highly successful at working side by side humans as well. They are not limited to being just best friends, but they have been found to be protectors and saviors as well, to their owners, others people and even other dogs too. One type of working dogs in
