Core Values I could not agree more with you that it is imperative that a person remain true to their core values. It has become popular with many companies to include the use of "Mission Statements." Many of these statements are ambiguous and do not always adequately reflect the companies actual goals and performance. I honestly cannot tell you the mission statements of any of the 3 police departments I have worked for. However, I do vividly remember the 3 words that were written on the walls in at my training academy. Three words I repeated daily. Three words I stared at through exhausted eyes from training and through blurred vision after being tossed around the mats repeatedly. Honesty. Integrity. Courage. Core values are defined
Every day, law enforcement officers encounter danger while carrying out their duties. The foremost duty of law enforcement officers are to serve and protect citizens. Most law enforcement agencies do this successfully. However, many people view law enforcement officers as the enemy. People need to be better informed about law enforcement and why officers take specific actions in certain circumstances. In our society, police are in a very dangerous position when it comes to the amount of force they can use when dealing with an individual. Officers use discretion when deciding the best course of action for the situation, whether it be physical force, persuasion, or coercion. They must take the correct course of action, because if they are too lenient or to forceful, even when dealing with petty things, they can be reprimanded by superiors and the public. Should police use force? Which circumstances warrant use force and what are the limits of force they can use? These questions are often asked when police are compelled to use force.
Are police ever justified in committing illegal acts that violate others rights are they ever justified especially when there is no personal gain but for reasons that may seem to be about a higher purpose. This is the argument for noble cause corruption. This idea brings it to the end justifies the means thinking. If we start down this line where can it lead us? The idea that we can justify any action that would violate civil rights and other laws because we feel that our cause is noble and it is not being done for personal gain but the good of others can lead us into some dark places. Police Ethics when policing minorities and use of force is a hot button topic socially today. With the recent climb of deaths caused by Police or while in police custody the questionability of ethics in minority has risen among all and not just with the minority groups. There are many current cases where the use of force that police officers chose is queried on excessive force. Recently there are several cases that bring investigation into the ethics of the officers who are involved in using deadly force. In a heartbeat the decision must be made of when and how much force is needed for the situation. Excessive use of force by some police officers, violating one human rights include unjustified shootings, fatal choking, tough beatings and rough treatment, continue because low levels of personal accountability continue to make it possible for officers to escape punishment and allow for repeated offenses. The ethics of officers involved of a case when force is used should be thoroughly investigated and questioned by the proper authorities as well as all involved.
New officers need to know that no profession demands a higher ethical standard than law enforcement. Whether or not there are other careers that require a similar dedication to doing the right thing, it is undeniable that there is a tremendous degree of expectations placed upon police officers. Every officer knows, or at least should know by now, that they live in a fishbowl. Friends, relatives, neighbors and strangers watch every move law enforcement officers make, both on and off duty. A police officer whose role as a public servant is to serve all types of people, as well as criminals. Public servants regularly provide advice and make judgments as to the degree of risk they should take with the public. Many decisions involving risk are relatively easy to make, but others are complex and significant consequences (Kernaghan and Langford, 2016). A survey was conducted which consist of ten questions. Each question of this survey deals with policing in America, weather it is the area in which you encountered officers to how your encounter was with them. 54 individuals of different races and ages took this survey. The survey was structured in a way to see if there is a connection between the old policing and the new age policing. In this survey, the participants must answer all the questions to the best of their ability. The participants included college student and non- college that ranged from the ages 17 and above. Unfortunately, nobody is perfect, and police officers also make wrong decisions that could jeopardize the integrity of their police department. Often people know something they do is wrong. However, they still do it because they feel no harm will come to them or it they think nobody will ever find out. Another one of my values is safety. Police, fire, and other emergency services should be readably available at all times. Any members acting out towards citizens should be punished through termination, fines, and possible jail time based on offense. With all the police brutality scandals in the news, I find this to be extremely important. All emergency personal should be required to have a chest and dash camera on at all times. Film should be reviewed on a weekly basis in a meeting with the emergency responder. Throughout our country many officers are being called in to question. Having ethical leaders to follow and learn from is important in any career; especially law enforcement. An ethical leader will “create an environment that is conductive to dignified treatment on the job.” (Pollock, 2017, pg. 106). A strong leader will treat his subordinates fairly but be firm in his actions. Police subculture undermines ethics and has a constant influence on officers’ decision-making process, which ultimately leads to misconduct. Police, like most professions, have a secretive yet unique type subculture because the lifestyles of its members are significantly different. Law enforcement officers tend to befriend other officers or people with similar roles within the criminal justice system. Many times, friendships extend to firefighters and other civil service personnel to include military members.
Over the last several years, most police departments have been facing numerous financial challenges. The main reason is law enforcement agencies are expected to do more with less and the stagnant economy. The combination of these factors has been placing pressure on many departments to begin imposing budget cuts. Evidence of this can be seen with a survey that was conducted by the University of North Carolina. They found that 67% of police departments made some kind of budget cuts for 2011. The most severe reductions were occurring in large police departments such as Los Angeles, Atlanta and Detroit. (Delfem, 2011, pp. 199 - 205) This is illustrating one of the most pressing issues affecting a wide variety of police departments across the country. To fully understand what is happening requires: examining the situation, how they are able to interact with other agencies (i.e. state / federal) and recommending the way this relationship can be improved. Together, these elements will offer specific insights about how police departments can effectively address this problem.
The movie ‘Policing the Police” is a documentary with INTERVIEWS done of citizens and the Newark Police Department. The first word I thought of when I began watching this movie was DYSFUCTION. From both the police and citizens stand point. The Newark Police Department seems to lack organization and communication. The city is a mess with gangs and gun violence. I believe this movie can have both the CONFLICT and FUNCTIONALIST theories applied. Looking at it from a conflict perspective the police and community are having somewhat of a power struggle. The community feels it’s being targeted and its members are being STEROTYPED just for being young African American men. For example, the citizens feel as though they are being profiled and unconstitutionally
The definition of human relations is everything done with each other as human beings in all kinds of relationships. An example of this is would be treating others with respect and dignity and following the Golden Rule; acting toward others as you would want others to act toward you. Public relations are activities performed by police agencies designed to create a favorable image of themselves. An example of police public relations is a law enforcement agency seeking developing a program to help strengthen the opinion that their community has on them. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that police are operating a pilot program that seeks to more easily resolve complaints such as whether an officer was rude, displayed a bad attitude or was speeding unnecessarily. Police-community relations is the relationships involved in both human relations and public relations between the police and the community. Programs such as National Night Out are a great example of police-community relations. They target specific efforts needed to make connections to underrepresented communities and ethnic communities. Building relationships within all populations is critical for achieving the goals of community outreach.
