Pollution Is The Largest Issue Concerning Human Survival

Pollution has always been an issue within our society. Derrick Jenson and Stephanie McMillan as well as Michael Pollan have all written articles about the issues in our environment and the effects of pollution. We are causing an increasing amount of pollution as time goes on. Virtually everything we do causes some form of damage to the environment and it seems that regardless of how much we want to fix this issue we are making no progress towards a solution. Based on their articles “As The World Burns” and Pollans article “Why Bother” these authors have similar views and yet contrast on many points.

Pollution can cause changes in the planet’s energy balance, such as changes in the greenhouse effect, which affects the amount of heat retained by Earth’s atmosphere, variations in the sun’s energy reaching Earth changes in the reflectivity of Earth’s atmosphere and surface. The changes have changed the climate many times which have an effect on humans also. (NRC EPA. 2010) Our planet can is good at reusing waste but humans are producing more than what the Earth can handle. Pollution happened at different stages and it has an impact on all living things including species and humans. Unfortunately, humans are the most polluting species.

Humans are the biggest enemy of the Earth and they are the most polluting species. Earth is very good at recycling waste, but we are generating far more than earth can handle. Pollution happens at different levels and it does not just impact our planet; it impacts all species, including mankind, who dwell on it (Patterson, n.d.). Your day has been great so far. You went on vacation, you found a dollar bill on the floor, you ate your favorite dish, nothing can be better than this. As soon as you walk on the boardwalk you are hoping to see big waves and fish in the sea, instead, you see dead fish and some animals floating in the water next to old car tires, trash, and fertilizer. Now you feel terrible and want to go home. Pollution is devastating. The reason why I researched this topic is that I do not want my family nor my planet to get sick. Pollution can be stopped very easily, it’s just that people “don’t know” how to stop or they just don’t care, which is a serious problem. I want people to see that pollution is mainly caused by humans, and also for them to see that it is a horrible thing that is happening. Some kids litter because they see their parents and their whole family doing it. When I was researching this topic, I noticed that I needed to find out more information, so I asked questions to myself. When did pollution get so bad? How many animals have gone extinct because of pollution? How many people die each year because of pollution? How much does everyone on the planet pollute each year? What is the best way to stop pollution? Can just one person make a difference? After a lot of research, I found out lots of ways that we can stop pollution, so it is possible to end it. Or at least improve the air.

Pollution has become a prevalent issue worldwide and has begun to affect the air used to breathe, the soil used to grow food, and the water used to drink. All of these effects result in commonly occurring destruction of health and wildlife that one may have seen on the news or heard from peers. In order to live, one needs food, water, clothing, and shelter. If the water and food that society consumes gets contaminated, a major component of life has been eradicated, which can only have negative consequences. If more people are educated as to what effects the environment, the world has a chance to counteract the effects of pollution. The main causes of pollution are the burning of fossil fuels such as with car exhausts, littering as a result of societal norms and laziness, and factory waste as a result of lax waste regulation, and can result in mass destruction of the environment and catastrophic effects on the everyday lives of contemporary people.

Pollution has become a major problem in our everyday lives. Pollution is everywhere whether it is realized or not. It is in the air, in the water, in everything. Pollution is not the result of one person’s actions. We all contribute to its growth. Where do you think all your waste goes? In the environment around you. And that is exactly the problem. People do not seem to care because they do not see its effects clearly. What they do not realize is that it is right in front of their noses.

All Americans know pollution is the introduction of harmful materials to the environment. It is throughout not only the United States, but even spread through the expanses of the world. According to National Geographic, the Antarctic ice sheet has traces of pesticides and other chemicals. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a huge pool of plastic in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. With this to consider, common pollution exists like burning coal, trash, pesticides, and even car pollutants. (McDaniel, 2011) From as big as landfills to as small as trash laying on the side of the road, pollution is something residents of the earth witness every day and many choose to do nothing about it. In fact, many people pollute themselves on a daily basis. These examples are evidence that pollution is a widespread issue and needs to be resolved. Pollution is the greatest environmental concern because of all the different types involved including the following: air pollution, water pollution, and land pollution.

With more and more people not doing their part to help and maintain the Earth, pollution has influenced and vastly affected how many of us live, the environment, and the health of many individuals. The term pollution scientifically means the establishment of contaminants into the environment that cause adverse change. It comes in many forms such as air, water, land, soil, thermal, and light. Pollution began around the world dating even dating back to when the Romans were present. The Romans would light fires, burn sculptures, and make armory, causing the process of pollution to start off slowly and transition into today’s time. Nevertheless, people today participate in various activities such as burning fossil fuels and releasing carbon dioxide which is doing even more damage than what the Romans ever did.

Pollution is a manmade problem, we are the ones responsible for so many natural disasters. The chemicals and all different types of substances we spill into the ground start to become a big from for us in the long run. When these chemicals soak into the ground, air, and water, they all contribute to becoming a bigger part in pollution. These pollutants contain toxins that are destroying our ecosystems and all the living organisms living in them.

Us humans use so many products in our daily lives. We usually use the product and just throw the container away, not knowing that it might contain chemicals that are harmful to the environment. We also eat so many products and throw away the wrap, container, bag, etc, in the same trash can. We don't separate our garbage and select the right category for it. Sometimes humans don't realize what it takes to make a certain product and we just use it one time when we can use it more than just one time. There are so many ways us humans can recycle and help the environment. Sometimes we are not well informed of the causes that lead to global warming and contamination harmful for all the humans, animals, plants, and all our natural resources and the many different ways we can help to stop all this. We are responsible for taking care of our planet, and preserving it in good condition. it is very important to recycle and help the environment.

Pollution has been a growing problem since the rapid evolution of technology after the Industrial Revolution, which contaminated Earth with its byproducts of harmful chemicals and an ever growing pile of trash. From harmful chemicals in the air to plastic floating in the ocean, pollution has contaminated the very world we have been living in, slowly creating a bleak future for the new generations to come. I was a young child, unaware of the danger of just breathing the air and how dirty the world has become over the last few hundred years. Eventually, a life-threatening event changed that view forever and urged me to take a stance on the topic of pollution, changing my views and having a huge impact on my future. Before long, I had become an advocate of preventing the pollution of our wonderful home, Earth.

Imagine a world without pollution. A globe that’s free and open with clean and fresh air. Now this may sound like the perfect world to many, but to others it sounds impossible. It takes a lot to make it happen and there are many steps before reaching that perfect world. Pollution has many factors, from litter, garbage and plastics to oil spills, urban air and greenhouse gasses. Things like this cause natural disasters and environment hazards such as hurricanes, floods, avalanches and storms. The sad truth is that no matter what nature does it’s going to survive, humans are the ones in danger and they have do something to save the future generations.
