According to Kathryn Cramer Brownell, an author and assistant professor of history at Purdue University stated that movies and entertainers within the industry have impacted national politics, influenced cultural constructions of identity, and affected social change as well. The industry has shaped and been molded by local, state, national, and international political pressures, decisions, and negotiations. The film is a way for people to see what life was like in different place and what people around the world are feeling and going through in their lives. Some films have touched on many taboo subjects: domestic violence, racism, sexual assault, religion, and sexuality. In the article Influence of Film on Modern Society, it is said that
Outline However for some games today is simply one more piece of their day by day lives, it is anything but difficult to overlook that only 120 years back, a number of the games we underestimate did not yet exist, and those that did would be scarcely unmistakable to the present day sports group of onlookers. The historical backdrop of present day sports points of interest an advancement, from diversions played essentially for excitement and recreation to an industry equaling some other in size and power.
Most everyone from previous generations have come to believe that forms of entertainment in today’s society—from approximately thirty years ago to now—has somewhat corrupted or put off the progress of the current generation. Though many forms of entertainment are the main reasons for our current society’s procrastination, Johnson states that today’s pop culture is educational. It exercises the mind and brain in ways we don’t even realize. Over the course of thirty to forty years, pop culture and media has changed significantly, enhancing the way we think and live our lives. Johnson proposed a theory called the “Sleeper Curve”, which basically states that current U.S. society is influenced intellectually by popular media. Through his text, he
In an article published for the National Association for Music Education, titled “Popular Culture and Video Games as Tools for Music Learning,” written by Adam Reyher. Focuses primarily on a video game called Rhythm Heaven Fever, Reyher discusses how the use of incorporating technology in the classroom by using video games will appeal to children more than traditional methods. He mentions how appealing to children through the type of music they enjoy listening to as well as using things that will keep their attention will unknowingly help them learn more.
The United States is renowned for its title as a melting pot for a variety of different cultures, and is very unique in the fact of having many different people in one place. The diversity of the beautiful nation that will call home is one of the very aspects that makes America the great nation that it is. The United States, albeit influenced by many different cultures and a vast array of continents, is most influenced by the country of England. The most widely spoken language in the United States is English, and the second most widely spoken language is Spanish. The most prevalent religious denomination is Protestantism with over 51%, then Roman Catholicism at 24%, then Mormonism at 2%, and Jewish at 1.7%. The United States is a very pop culture
This chapter rounded out our examination of popular culture from the last of the three perspectives, the interaction approach; this focuses on how popular culture results from the interactions we as individuals have within small groups. It’s important to note just how much our identity needs recognition from others in order to exist as this really highlights the relationship between societal groups and the individual. They almost provide a validation of the individual self. The way in which we present ourselves within certain situations can be referred to as presentations of self; these shift based on the social context we are in. How we interact in groups can be based on the type of group we are in such as a dyad or triad; however, if you are seeking to gain in social network, you must go beyond your
In the context of this paper, it is important to understand the significance of place designation in Hip Hop culture. Dr. Murray Foreman, a professor of media studies at Northeastern University captured this when he stated, “…youth use rap in the deployment of discourses of urban space and more proximate scales of urban locality, or place (Foreman).” Dr. Foreman’s assertion reveals two things. First, urban youth engaging with rap is significant because many black males see Hip Hop as an opportunity to escape and reverse their ill-fated futures as the urban untouchables. Rappers like Shawn “Jay Z” Carter describes this when he raps,
W. Scott Poole’s chapter, “Undead Americans”, focuses on American pop culture and its relation to shaping realities. Poole discusses the popularity of zombies and vampires within American pop culture while also examining how it stems from war, specifically the Vietnam War. Through Poole’s discussion of zombies and vampire, it also creates a problem within the individual, “a concern over the possibility of a personal apocalypse” (Poole, 204). While focusing on examining American pop culture and its relation to reality, it includes the relation of unease within American society (Poole, 217). Based on Hoefferle’s eighth chapter, the definition of new cultural history is formed through understanding “how past cultures shaped identity and created
Chapter 10 presents a more politicized approach to cultural studies. Storey examines the ways in which popular culture and high culture are often presented in contrast with one another, drawing distinctions between ‘them’ and ‘us’. Again this can be related back to hip-hop, which was formerly or still held as a rebel culture, to now a unified one. It is the pipeline for effectively communicating to and with young people. The pipeline connects to the political, social, and cultural views of the vast majority of Western youths. My generation does not fondly find unity and/or enjoyment in higher art forms such as opera or ballet, but finds it more in the art of hip-hop. I feel like we need to have a view that culture has a value, not just in terms
Marilyn Monroe, McDonald’s and Titanic are all prevalent figures, places, and movies in American pop culture. Pop culture consists of ideas, images and perspectives that are popular within the mainstream of a culture. American pop culture, specifically, is very influential on foreign cultures and societies. Western culture affects other societies negatively due to the unrealistic portrayal of America and foreign countries, the limited information provided about the impacts of American culture, and the diminishing of traditional ideals.
Today, America is seemingly defined by its popular culture which has become a major export to the whole wide world. The pop culture refers to all things that people usually do and talk about, manners and beliefs that make a society grow. The culture that is well accepted and followed by everybody in the society. For every place, there is always different style of culture that all people who lives there are subject to follow in able to fit in to that given place. America is one of the major countries that influence other nations in terms of being fashionable and making life easier by having a unique way of discovering a lot of things. Great deal of trends will be noticed by just looking around and many people probably do not realize how
There is no denying the fact that teens are heavily influenced by celebrities and pop culture (Domestic violence in pop culture 1). Be it a famous musician, actor or an athlete; adolescents tend to idolize them and follow their example (Domestic violence in pop culture). With domestic violence issues becoming more and more prevalent in the personal lives of celebrities, teens are frequently being exposed to cases of physical confrontation and harassment in relationships (Domestic violence in pop culture 1). This is not only subliminally encouraging them to take such measures if a similar situation arises in their own private lives but is also inducing a personality trait which does little to resolve disagreements peacefully choosing instead
Chapter 3 in Major Problems with American Popular Culture discusses the meaning and purposes of popular culture in the 19th century American society. The text presents a variety of materials attributed to America popular culture of that time, such as accounts of Fejee Mermaid exposition, extracts from the 19th century Shakespeare's adaptations and the eyewitness testimony of the Astor Place Riot in 1849. Furthermore, the YouTube video sources discuss the concept of imagined community, first suggested by Benedict Anderson. Imagined community is discussed in the light of popular culture, which becomes an alternative instrument of imagining communities with the emergence of different types of media, it being film, theatre, news or internet.
Hooks' term "white supremacist capitalist patriarchy" is an aspect of multicultural feminist theory because it is a central defining facet of the multicultural feminist theory. This term is crucial to her multicultural analysis of pop culture because, “upper-class White men and women have privileges [that are] denied to lower-class women and men of disadvantage racial and ethnic groups” (Lorber, 232). Furthermore, “white supremacy was that term that allow[s] one to acknowledge our collusion with the forces of racism and imperialism” (Hooks, Cultural Criticism & Transformation). Additionally, the analysis of pop culture by using the term “white supremacist capitalist patriarchy” explains the subliminally sexist, classist, and racist messages that are within the discourse of pop culture. This term is crucial in examining pop culture because it explain why certain sexes and races are depicted the way they are, and also why certain individuals have the privileges that they have. This term reveals the misogynistic, Eurocentric society that we live in, and it reinforces the messages that we are sent through pop culture every day.
The research topic that I chose to work on is television. I chose this specific topic for various reasons. One reason why I decided to discuss the television subject because for one, it truly has a massive effect on the masses of people, especially when it comes to certain cultures. For instance, the black communities. Reality TV shows such as Love and Hip Hop and Basketball Wives, for example, has a huge affect on black guys and girls alike, especially black females because within these TV shows, the people on there display certain behaviors that many find admirable, such as the constant usage of vulgar, wearing revealing outfits, being a player or thug, etc. All of these characteristics are being displayed in most of our black communities today, and these reality TV shows are making it no better.
What pops into your mind first when you think of popular culture in today’s day and age? The latest dirt on celebrities or the latest iPhone release? The latest controversial issue or the latest iTunes hit? Regardless, pop culture encompasses all four of these concepts and many more, which consume the world we live in each and every day. Think about education. At first thought, your mind may not make the connection between the newest Taylor Swift song and the highest ACT score, but the linkage between the two becomes undeniable when you dive deeper. Ponder this: each day millions of kids walk into school buildings across the United States, each of them glued to a little slice of pop culture, a.k.a. their phone. And each day these millions
