Positive Aspects Of Intercultural Relationships

There are certain qualities that are necessary for the development of intercultural relationships. An individual who pursues these relationships can find many positive and unique aspects in developing relationships with those from other cultures. In contrast, there are those that tend to avoid people from other cultures due to preconceived ideas about certain people groups and uncertainty in communication as well as the desire to stay in their comfort zone in seeking others that are similar (Samovar pgs. 387-88). Personally, my own experience with intercultural relationships has provided for me a more balanced view of the world and the ability to look at my own culture in a whole new way.
I believe in order to become more developed interculturally, it involves letting go of ethnocentrism. I discovered this was an area of struggle when I first moved abroad to China. I didn’t realize that my superior cultural attitude over the host culture got in the way of developing relationships in the other culture. How much more this can play out when we are in our own culture. Furthermore, this attitude initially blocked my ability to learn not only from Chinese culture but other cultures in the international community as well. As I learned that my culture has its flaws, a positive aspect in developing interculturally relationships is that I became less ethnocentric.
I think another positive aspect in developing intercultural relationships is the ability to expand your worldview. This
