Globalization is when companies and people begin to expand and integrate on an international scale, creating international free trade. While globalization has positive effects, it also is important to understand the impact it has across the world. “This process has effects on the environment, on culture, on political systems, on economic development and prosperity, and on human physical well-being in societies around the world” (What Is Globalization?). Globalization allows the free trade of products between countries, therefore its impact is far and widespread.

“Its leader, known as Subcomandante Marcos, referred to globalization as a “process to eliminate that multitude of people who are not useful to the powerful”(Strayer and Nelson 1032). Throughout Mexico, globalization has left widespread economic inequality, that is still seen to this day. Large corporations, wealthy countries, and consumers, along with poor regulations are responsible for the negative effects of globalization. It has created a huge divide in wealth among countries and people. “In 1820, the ratio between the income of the top and bottom 20 percent of the world’s population was three to one. By 1991, it was eighty-six to one”(Strayer and Nelson 1030). While the term globalization is farely new, the process goes far back in history. As trade routes were developed, the spread of religion, goods, and technology spread. This is also where slavery and exploitation of people and countries increased, and where the foundations of twentieth century globalization were developed (Strayer and Nelson).
Globalization reaches all corners of the world and regulations across the globe are needed in order to protect those who are the weakest. Activist groups have been created to counteract globalizaiton.
