Jealousy is just another part of everyday life. As shown in Bobbie Ann Mason's "Being Country", it's not always easy to look at the bright side. For example, when Mason's family was eating dinner, she called it "fuel for work". Instead of looking to the negative side, she could've been grateful that she had food. Rather than looking at the positive side, we as humans like to generate an invalidating conclusion from unfortunate events in our lives to people that seem more fortunate. Being jealous is the feeling envious of someone’s achievements or advantages. In A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the character Gene Forrester is very jealous of his best friend Finny. From the beginning of the book Gene always admits he is jealous of him, but Phineas never seems to notice how Gene is feeling. It is hard to admit jealousy but the way Knowles does it helps us realize that jealousy is a normal part of life.
In the play Othello, jealousy is shown to be very evident through the actions of the characters. Jealousy is a life trait in all humans and even in all types of animals. People always connect jealousy with the feeling of envy, to want some object, characteristic, or person that others have. It is only but natural to have the sense of envy and jealousy. These emotions can be active in everyday life ranging from stories to real life. Jealousy, given its negative connotation, is always portrayed as an adverse outcome. Hedding this information, not always will being jealous cause poor outcomes. Being jealous or envious can cause both superb and traumatic results. Examples could be if person one were zealously jealous of another’s achievements person one may possibly strive to beat the other. There are many instances throughout the play that show jealousy between the characters. Throughout the play, jealousy is used for destructive purposes only. I believe that Iago longed to get revenge on Othello for previous issues. This only results in a long line of accusations and disputes between the characters in Othello.
After reading Intimate Relationships: Chapter 11 Fidelity and Jealousy, I would say that jealousy is the single greatest threat to the well-being and stability of intimate relationships today. Even the first excerpt provides as horrible act done in the name of jealously, “fighter pilot, was found guilty… of capital murder for killing a teenage girl to prove his love for his jealous fiancée”(P.190). My first initial reaction to this is how unhealthy is this relationship that the fiancée would ask her partner to kill someone to prove his love, but then why would he actually go through with this!?
