Introduction: The current paper focuses on the phenomenon that known as post-series affect. First, I will describe the relevant literature regarding the psychological and physiological effects of television. Then, I will discuss relevant literature on social identity theory in the context of the audience’s experience, and the non-exclusivity of emotions such as happiness and sadness. I will then discuss, conceptually, how post-series affect can be caused by various factors of a TV show. Finally, I will describe a testable hypothesis, along with methods and research techniques that could be used to study post-series affect. The presence of television shows in the development of society has become increasingly prevalent, even to leading to a …show more content…
For each participant, series of adverse, neutral and positive images (independent variable) were shown to elicit emotional arousal in each participant. After the initial light reflex, the pupil was found to increase to a greater degree (the dependent variable) when one was viewing either pleasant or unpleasant pictures, compared to the neutral (Bradley, Miccoli, Escrig, & Lang, 2008). This shows that pupil dilation is a valid way to measure one's emotional arousal in response to an image, and when used when watching a television show, more emotional arousal may indicate one’s interest in the series. Further research could be useful in predicting if one will experience post-series …show more content…
Only those who had chosen a television show with 5 or more released seasons would be allowed to continue (to ensure a long term time commitment). Several weeks before starting the series, each participant would be given a likert-type questionnaire in order to determine their normative behavior and emotional states. After watching the first episode, participants would be asked to record their if the show lived up to their expectations and other thoughts they may have had while watching. Throughout the rest of the experiment, participants would be asked to participate in expressive writing activities in order to gauge their emotional arousal and interest in the show. Halfway through the series, participants would be asked to fill out another likert-type questionnaire to determine their enjoyment of the show, and if they feel empathetic towards or relate to any of the shows characters. After the end of the series, participants would be asked to participate in daily expressive writing techniques for a month to gauge any symptoms of post-series affect and overall life satisfaction in the time after the series is

The television show stands to be viewed as if it was filmed on a handheld camera. The show has the tendency to be extremely awkward and people who do not take the time to watch a full episode will anticipate that the show may be identified as dull and a waste of time. One would feel that the show may be simple with no plot or meaning. However, after watching an entire episode, one will realize that a complex plot is not necessary to enjoy the show because of the awkward and entertaining relationships between the characters. Although, there are several plot twists that may catch the viewer’s
Television executive Lauren Zalaznick, gave a presentation called “The conscience of television” for TED Talk which she discussed past five decades of the highest standing shows on air. Zalaznick runs studies which go to great lengths on how the topics of television shows changed from decade to decade and how viewers changed the reason of watching based on what was happening in the world. Television’s conscious effects our emotions, challenges our values, and influences our views on the world by what we choice to watch.

Today’s society has been transformed by means of communication and the available information through mass media. Most Americans rely on television for news, sports, and entertainment. Television is one of the greatest inventions to ever be created, right? Lucian Dorneanu, an editor of Softpedia, stated, “Wherever a television is on, it draws attention like no other piece electronic in the house. It can be source of amusement, knowledge, or, misused, of violence and almost self-inflicted psychiatric disorders.” Today television is having a huge impact on people more than ever before, by doing more harm than good. Television is supposed to be bringing entertainment and laughter to every household, by showing a positive way of life. Although, over the years, talk shows became one of the most watched on television. These talk shows are causing violence, teaching bad habits, loosing family value.
Since its inception in the 1950s, television has become an integral part of American society. Television has always been a means of entertainment, but it has developed into something further. Television is a tool that can reflect and nurture values and morals. Throughout the years, television and our society have had a symbiotic relationship. Our culture influenced television, while television influenced our society. When The Truman Show came out, it embodied our media culture from the past, but it also predicted what was to come after the movie was released. When television networks first came on the scene, they consciously stayed clear from
Club website. He states that while there is a new landscape of television emerging, it is not necessarily a good or bad thing. VanDerWerff describes that because each generation thinks they are superior to the one before it, the format of television is changing to become more personalized to each viewer (hence, the growth television programs). These two articles, similar in message and views, attempt to sway the readers to form similar opinions as the authors. Although Holmes and VanDerWerff both write about the effects of television on certain time periods, VanDerWerff’s article is more convincing due to his effectiveness in acknowledging the audience, valid credibility, and logical reasoning within his
As the influence of print wanes, the content of politics, religion, education, and anything else that comprises public business must change and be recast in terms that are most suitable to television. I also believe that the media of communication available to a culture are a dominant influence on the formation of the culture's intellectual and social preoccupations. What we see on television has a big impact on our lives, on how we act and what we like to do. Media learnt how to influence the masses and now they could actually change a countries culture if they want to. What we see on television is what we talk about, so it’s really easy to change the perception of things based on television.

Throughout the term of the class, we have studied many concepts of television and the transitions television has made over the years. One of the most prominent aspects of television is the ability to access content conveniently through many mediums. Through this easy access provided by networks such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon prime many viewers have developed a new habit of binge- watching. Unfortunately, the viewers don’t realize how this new trend of binge-watching effects them mentally and physically.
Can T.V. shows be the reflection of our society or influence the behavior of the members of our community? Since 1936 when television broadcasting begin, it priority was to inform and to entertain our society; subsequently, a massive amount of rules and regulations were created to control the material presented in TV, which principal goal was to safeguard the moral and ethical standards of it time. Nevertheless, from its beginning to the present home entertainment television standards contents have change; likewise, the moral an ethics values of our society have change and continuing changing from generation to generation. In his essay “Watching TV Makes You Smarter", Steven Johnson - an author specializing in media, pop culture and technology - claims that watching TV is actually healthy for the viewers ' mind as contemporary television requires more cognitive thinking than it did previously. Johnson supported his claim by explaining about his sleeper curve throughout the essay. “The most debased forms of mass diversion – video games, violent television dramas and juvenile sitcoms that we think is bad turn out to be nutritional for us after all” illustrates the meaning of his sleeper curve. (121) Nowadays, parents do not allow children to watch TV because they think that the TV shows are not helpful for their children, and they may be affected by the terrible scenes. Johnson argued that the shows from back then till now have improved greatly and beneficial for kids instead. Johnson may be right that watching TV makes us smarter and it shows us what really happens in life. However, people may sometimes get addicted to the TV shows, stay inside and watch ridiculous, pointless television shows instead of the shows that will benefit them. The good and bad sides of television shows depend on what kind of TV shows it is and completely up to the person who are watching it.

All participants are fluent in English and familiar with North American television programs.
The Cultivation theory is probably one amongst the foremost debated and polemic theories within the field of communications. It states that television has become the most supply of storytelling in today’s society and also the combined result of huge tv exposure by viewers over time subtly shapes the perception of social reality for people and for the culture as a full (Gerbner,1976). In alternative words during a serious television watchers mind, art is the imitation of life.
