No-one deserves to be abused, be that physically, emotionally or sexually and the same rules apply that no child or young person should be subjected to neglect. It is every child’s right to live without fear of harm or abuse.

What is child abuse? From the word “abuse” we can understand that it is some sort of a maltreatment of a child, causing harm and damage both to his physical and psychological well-being. At the Federal level, the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) describes child abuse and neglect as: “any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker, which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse, or exploitation, or an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm.” Child abuse is a very substantial and widely spread problem in U.S. affecting children of any age, gender, race, background or income, with more than 1.8 million investigations done every year and on average, killing more than 5 children every day. The main issue of child abuse is that the abuser is usually someone a child loves or depends on (a parent, sibling, coach, neighbor, etc.), who violates child’s trust putting personal interests first, therefore official numbers of how many children suffer maltreatment might be not accurate enough as remarkable amount of these cases go unreported. Each case of child abuse is unique, with a lot of individual factors involved, nevertheless, we can distinguish some of the common causes, such as poverty, lack of education, depression, mental or physical health

If the signs of abuse is not detected in time it can leave negative traits and will hinder the child’s adult abilities. This can include the child repeat what they with through as a child and committing the same crime to another child or they can commit murder or suicide. Preventions and interventions have to be near in order for healing and rebuilding to occur, and the workers who work around these children can be the ones to prevent this from happening or continuing to happen.

Sending children to juvenile for life may seem harsh but i think it’s a good idea. I say this because depending on they what they did they deserve it. Like if a child over the age 13 kills someone they should go to jail for life, because they took someone’s life. I feel if kids think they can do adult things when they get in trouble they should be treated as adults. If they were doing normal kid stuff they wouldn’t be in situations that could send them to life anyway.

There are many things in our society today that unfortunately go overlooked. One such thing that is overlooked is the number of children who are being abused. Unfortunately these children are going through life not knowing whether or not their parents will loose their temper and perhaps kill them. Being a future teacher this article actually means a lot to me. My job will be to make sure that my students are safe. I have every intention in making sure that if I see any signs of maltreatment or neglect that I will report them right away. It is terrible that parents can be this mean to children that it affects them into the later years of their life. I think it’s horrible if they have an attitude or did something wrong you should never ever abuse them. If that happens the kids shouldn’t be around the adult. Physical abuse gives effects to a child when it’s over with. The child has bruises, cuts, and is also afraid to go home. Neglecting and emotional abuse are also horrible. If your child feels worthless and hates life because of their parents it’s called emotional abuse. Neglecting abuse is also horrible you always need to give your child what they need. They should always have food, water, clothes. Never ever take something to far to the point where you abuse your child. Children also need to be taken care of by parents.

People have noticed that if the child that was abused does not seek help and counselling they could turn out the same way. their beatings could become more brutal. They could get addicted to the same things their parents did. As the child grows older they will have scars. Not only physically but, mentally. I believe that this situation can have two sides, but in my personal opinion is that I don’t agree with the situation that a child live temporarily in prison. Should there be harsher punishments for child abuse? Child abuse is as old as crime in society. Often times the abuse continues for years before it is even reported. Also when a child reports being abused, the child is dismissed as being a liar. Research shows that 32.6% of 1-3 year olds have been abused. (Child Abuse and Domestic Violence, 2011). In the United Sates more than four children die from abuse and neglect on a daily basis. Over 70% of these children are below the age of three (Safe Horizon). 2.9 million cases of child abuse are reported every year in the United States (Safe Horizon). Every year more than 3.6 million referrals are made to child protection agencies in involving more than 6.6 million children (ACE Study).
