Another opportunity to gather information would be with the health screening. In addition to the above questions, more information about the health status of the individual is vital. These questions are designed to understand the health insurance status of the justice involved individuals and create prioritized list. Practitioners have found many uses for the new core jail standards in the two years since they were issued. The American Correctional Association (ACA) Standards Committee approved the Core Jail Standards, First Edition in August 2009 and they were available to the field in January 2010. These were the first national “minimum” jail standards to be issued by any organization or agency. The National Institute of Corrections (NIC) sent printed copies other standards to each other nation’s 3,200 jails in 2010. NIC, along with the American Jail Association (AJA) and the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA), were instrumental in the development other standards. This paper will identify a governmental agency that regulates the healthcare that is provided to prisoners in an institution within the United States, along with the foundation of such an agency and who regulates the licenses, accreditation, certifications, and authorization for employment for those who work within one of these
In Mississippi, there's a call for the Department of Corrections to start taking bids for prison contracts. In light of former Corrections Commissioner Christopher Epps' being charged with corruption relating to prison contracts, a five-person task force is recommending that no company should have a prison contract unless they won the contract in a competitive bidding process. Until I read this article, I assumed all prison services were put up for bids. For example, the Keefe Group has a no-bid contract to furnish commissary services in all of Mississippi's prisons.
