The increase of professionalism in corrections facilities and among correction officers is critical and not everyone is cut out to perform such tasks. Furthermore, historical flaws among correction institutes and adapting to new ways in rehabilitating offenders have transitioned into a more professional process than earlier correction institutes. "One early reformer, Richard A. McGee, changed the nature of corrections in California by upgrading the physical plants and staffing patterns, by institutional research, and by developing alternatives to imprisonment", (Siegel & Bartollas, 2014, p. 345). Furthermore, the small transition that McGee implemented was a new movement in taking correction facilities to a new direction and creating a more professional environment among correction institutes. The American Correctional Code of Ethics has seventeen codes that reflect how a correctional officer must adhere to in regards to ethics and integrity (Siegel & Bartollas, 2014). Therefore, integrity and ethics are simply doing the right thing regardless of the situation that has developed. All of these elements concoct a professional workplace among corrections as well as any law enforcement capacity and are the driving force for advancing to an even more professional workplace. Professionalism among correction facilities and staff members goes beyond the scope of rules and guidelines on paper, as each staff member must treat an inmate with dignity and respect as well as their colleagues (Siegel & Bartollas, 2014).
