Over the years, most of us will have worked at numerous jobs and held different positions. As things in life change, work ethics should have remained the same, at least one would assume. Professionalism in the workplace is not just being on time and dressing appropriately for the job. It means having a positive attitude, being respectful of your coworkers and clientele, conducting yourself responsibly, holding yourself accountable, being ethical and having integrity, and always holding a high work ethic. With demanding managers, filling out more paperwork, the burden of additional projects, complying with protocols, and additional forms being added to the already thick and overstuffed books, how can anyone keep a positive attitude? As explained by Young, M.R. (2011), angry patients, petrified children, and over-worked doctors and nurses can lead to unpleasant and tense work atmospheres and communication breakdown. This communication breakdown leads to irritated consumers, patients and families, and a tense and unhealthy working environment. If you keep your cool and stay confident and calm, and show genuine concern for your client and co-workers, you can turn it into a win/win situation.
Professionalism is also going above and beyond the call of duty. It not only builds confidence in yourself, it keeps patients and clients content and relieves the stress and workload on your co-workers. Help resolve conflicts, stay focused, always keep your word and follow through. Don’t make promises you can't keep. Even though a patient is diagnosed with "dementia" or "confusion," it does not mean they will forget what you promised. Manage your time and your stress.
