Professionalism In The Workplace

The textbook describes the characteristics of professionalism to be accuracy, courteousness and respectfulness, dependability, flexibility, commitment to lifelong learning, tactfulness accountability, positive attitude, and a professional appearance. In the following paragraphs I will describe five characteristics that I find important in professionalism.

Believe it or not a lot of individuals do not know how to become and maintain being professional. This is a perfect to quote "lead by example", be an example for others to learn from you and you could always learn from others. If you are not learning something every day you are wasting your own time. Its always a perfect time to learn and today I learned about professionalism. From a bit of research through internet and a few friends, and also from what I know and have experienced from day to day. A lot of issues I have been through could of been solved by just using some professionalism, for example, thinking before I reacted to certain situations and conversations. Always carry yourself professional and people will think much more highly about you and the way they percieve you.

To be a person who is deemed professional you have to have a sense of leadership. Leadership in the healthcare field means you have to be willing to teach others. You help build and maintain a culture that facilitates professionalism. As a leader you do not participate in workplace pranks. Another important aspect of professionalism is honor and integrity. To have honor and integrity in the workplace you need to be forthcoming with information; and not hold important information for your own benefit. You can admit your own errors. You deal with confidential information discreetly and appropriately. One of the most important attributes regarding professionalism is respect. You have to respect institutional staff and all staff representatives. You have to respect patients rights and dignity and their privacy and confidentiality. A person who is professional has to have caring, compassionate and have communication. You treat the patient as an individual taking into account lifestyle, religious beliefs, and ethnicity. You communicate bad news with sincerity and compassion. You deal with sickness, death, and dying in a professional manner with the patient and the patient’s family members.

A professional is characterized by or conforming to the technical or ethical standards of a profession (2) : exhibiting a courteous, conscientious, and generally businesslike manner in the workplace. Being professional should be a subconscious effort in the fact that it should always be applied. When employees are professional it helps the system run more efficiently and safely. A person must me a certain criteria when being evaluated on professionalism, a person is judged based on the clients; Attitude, Values, Communication techniques, and approachability. Physicians put trust into nurses in order to carry out orders that are needed to save patients’ lives. If you’re not looked at as professional and responsible, it is going to be very hard to have a successful career. Responsibility is what nursing is all about. Webster’s Dictionary defines Professionalism as “the skill, good judgement, and polite behavior that is expected from a person who is trained to do a job well.” Ginger exemplifies professionalism in her everyday life with the definition above. She has quality nursing skills, she uses excellent judgement in the care of her patient’s and is always polite to parents, coworkers, and physicians.

Professionalism for a nurse begins when he or she begins attending nursing school. For example, a student can demonstrate professionalism to classmates and instructors by turning in assignments on time, working diligently, and confronting conflicts in a mature manner 2. By providing a professional environment in class, instructors and classmates will have more respect for that particular student as he or she progresses through clinicals, other course work and eventually into a career as a Nurse. In a highly respected profession such as nursing, professionalism is an important element to staying employed and setting one’s self apart from the rest of the applicants when competing for a potential job. By definition professionalism are the qualities and traits that describe a professional. While knowledge is crucial in any profession, according to an article published by the University of Kansas (2012), “all medical professionals must strive to retain those humanistic qualities integrity, respect, and compassion that constitute the essence of professionalism.” Whether you work in a hospital or administration these three qualities encompass the core of nursing and exemplify what it means to be a professional.

In a hospital you see doctors, nurse, lab techs, counseling and patients all in a building together. They all work together in harmony to treat the patients that they are assigned to. Have you ever seen a nurse bad mouth a patient or a doctor? Besides the movies and TV shows, everyone in the hospital are respectful and courteous to other around them. But what makes all these professions work well together without being disrespectful to each other? That 's right professionalism. To be professional in the work place is important for many reason such as providing a safe, mannerly environment for the patients and staff working in that environment. Some types of professionalism in the medical workplace are how to communicate appropriately with each other, respecting others and maintaining being professional. Each plays an important role in making safe and respected medical workplace.
