In the 1950s, when rock was developed, one of the first groups to drift to it was teenagers, being attracted to its themes of rebellion and non conformity. Certain groups of individuals have sprung up around certain musical styles. For instance, punk, techno, and ethnic music all include some type of subculture that embrace an entire lifestyle.

Rock and roll (often written as rock & roll or rock 'n ' roll) is a genre of popular music that originated and evolved in the United States. The music we know as rock and roll emerged as a defined musical style in the mid 1950s, even though a form of it had been on the horizon for at least a decade or so. A quarter of the American population moved during World War II, and that is what brought southern, rural, sacred and secular traditions into contact with urban-based music and its audiences. Rock and roll drew on many different styles. It derived most directly from the rhythm and blues music of the 1940s, which it developed from earlier blues, boogie-woogie, jazz and swing music. It was also influenced by gospel, country, western, and traditional folk music. With the combinations of all of these genres of music, that help to create this new style of music excited a worldwide generation of young listeners. Even though it had the attention of young listeners it started to upset the already established social, cultural and musical authorities. With this new music style coming into full affect along with new dances and people having voicing out their own opinion caused a lot of turmoil. There were three different types of musical styles that many successful bands used. Each style was different in its own way; there was the ”beat“ bands. Which were fundamentally the pop-rock bands; like The Beatles. Then there were the R&B bands, like The Rolling Stones. That used a guitar based different version of American blues. Which would soon became into “garage" and "frat" rock.

By the late 1960s, the American psychedelic and acid rock movements had filtered into Australia. This type of music then evolved into progressive rock and other genres of music that are still popular today.

In the summer of 1969, a music festival known as “Woodstock” took place for three straight days in Upstate, New York with thirty-two musical acts playing, and over 400,000 people from around the world coming to join this musical and peaceful movement. Woodstock started out being a small concert, created to promote peace in the world. Now, Woodstock is still being celebrated over 40 years later. The progressive rock era was primarily found and established in the late 1960s to the early 1970s. It primarily evolved due to a "mostly British attempt to elevate rock music to new levels of artistic credibility.” The primary characteristics of this genre is to push the boundaries of “rock’s technical and compositional boundaries.” By utilizing this idea, the songs produced incorporate elements from jazz, classical, and vary greatly depending on the background of the person. If a musician grew up listening to Jazz, there will be lots of jazz elements found in the progressive music he or she was producing. The instrument choice also provides a huge element of the unique sound a musician or band presents through his or her music.

Alternative is a genre of rock music that emerged from independent music underground of the 1980s and became widely popular in the 1990s and 2000s. This refers to the genre’s distinction from mainstream rock music, expresses primarily in a distorted guitar sound, subversive and or transgressive lyrics and generally a nonchalant, defiant attitude. The popularity of alternative rock music came about after the grunge period. Grunge was a type of alternative rock music that denounced commercialism. During the height of success for alternative rock music, many record companies handed out the name to bands that fit the requirements loosely at best. This was done in hopes that the label of alternative would help sales. However, looking back one can

The genre combines elements of traditional Progressive Rock with more recent styles of music such as Alternative Rock, Post-Hardcore, and Post-Rock. Because of this, the genre is able to infuse foundations of older Progressive rock and has continuously innovated itself. This directly affects the creative development of American rock and roll because the innovation of the new progressive sound makes it far more accessible to the listening population of today than older progressive bands such as “Yes” and “Genesis”. The genre tends to make shorter songs, like punk does, as oppose to tracks that are 20 minutes or longer commonly found in Prog.

Experimental rock or avant-garde rock is a type of music based on rock which experiments with the basic elements of the genre, or which pushes the boundaries of common composition and performance technique. Progressive rock of the 1970s represents a unique moment in the modern music and culture history; moment which introduced an atypical association of the highly sophisticated and complicated means of expression, derived mainly from the area of so-called serious art, with the wide popularity, bordering almost with fashion. American Marxist philosopher and social theorist Bill Martin aptly named this remarkable phenomenon of progressive rock, which was based on the British rock experimentalism of the second half of the sixties and which became a global artistic trend in the following decade, using the paradoxical term “popular avant-garde”.

In order to appreciate these two types of music, one must look at a bit of background of each. To start, music has distinct elements that audience members should learn to identify and recognize in music. Essentially, progressive rock draws on many other styles of music such as jazz, classical music especially from the baroque period as well as a touch of folk. Whereas, experimental music is often assigned to any music that strays outside of accepted classification or exploration of sounds that the listener is not yet familiar with. In the 1970’s progressive rock also drew inspiration from the verses of the Kalevala. A Finnish band by the same name was the first to be active in the genre, and was pretty popular in those years as a live-band. Their line-up was constantly changing, though, and their luck ended when one of their members, Matti Kurkinen, died in a car accident. After that shocking event, the
