Disney used the character of Mickey Mouse and others to create movies that customers enjoyed like “Beauty and the Beast” while Pixar was producing made up animated characters to create films like “Cars” and “Wall-E”. Disney was creating animated movies but struggling to generate the amount of money Pixar was making on producing only one movie a year. I worked for twelve hours at a phone bank calling voters to promote passage of Measure J. This was the second time I have done that for a Sonoma County initiative. Volunteering for the phone bank, I already knew what to expect (lists of phone numbers and names, scripts to use, and the people I would mostly be talking to, provided they answered the phone.) This was more than an assignment for me, however. This is something I feel truly passionate about because I use these parks regularly.

The objectives of this project are to: (1) Create a writing workshop at In The Meantime, collect stories from Black gay men that are central to South Los Angeles; (2) To document theses stories; (3) To have the video of these stories added to the collections at various local and national institutions; (4) To have the stories performed at three differing spaces [In The Meantime, Holman United Methodist Church, and the ONE Archives]; (5) Have the stories and memorabilia, relating to Black gay life in South Los Angeles, archived at In The Meantime; and (6) Have the stories and memorabilia exhibited.

For my capstone project I decided to create something that I have never done before. Fiona, Nadia, and myself had an idea to write a funny play script. A few weeks ago, the three of us sit together and had a conversation which lead us to such an idea. We were talking and sharing some of our experiences which related to creativity and art that we had before. Theatrical show or drama was not something new for both Nadia and Fiona, but it was completely new for me. However, with almost no experience in this field of art. I felt like this could be the challenge that I need to do for my capstone project; I have to step out of my comfort zone and expand my creativity as I challenge myself with this task.

In reflecting upon this process, my ideas around what the project was initially envisioned to be and what it actually became has changed so radically and I think in that change and growth is where I’ve learned the most about what my historical practice in the future will look like and what types of “doing history” I enjoy the most. Initially, my vision for my project was heavily steeped in mostly primary, ethnographic-based research because my idea of “good” historical work was so heavily tied to doing something that hadn’t been done before. During my observations in the different classrooms at “The childcare Center”, I learned about the proper environment, the fundamentals of the teachers lesson plans, their health and safety regulations, their approach to guidance and discipline, and overall quality childcare. The center has eight different levels of age groups; each of them has their own curriculum based on their age and developmental needs. This curriculum changes and has a new theme each month that helps the lead teachers to be able to start their lesson plans each week. From infants all the way to pre-K the lesson plans include fine motor, gross motor, art and sensory, math and manipulatives, music and movement, language including both signing and Spanish.
