I have always believed that my Christian faith comes first and that it should be integrated into all areas of my life. Upon taking the survey: ‘What Does Integration Mean to You?’ my responses lined up with the category of "Psychology as incomplete or narrow” as my Christian approach to the role of psychology. This approach was scored three times higher than my second highest number, meaning that my views strongly correlate with this approach. The belief that goes along with this approach is that both psychology and theology are needed to gain an understanding of God’s design of humans. I believe that a holistic approach is best when working with a client. In the book Competent Christian Counseling it states that the “job of the Christian counselor is to “spur” the client on toward change and growth, to encourage him or her to become a more whole and loving person, and to become more like Christ” (Clinton & Ohlschlager, 2002, p. 203). As an upcoming Christian mental health professional I believe that my job will be to direct my clients toward God’s loving arms. Psalm 147:3 states “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds”, God is the ultimate healer and I believe that we are to help others pursue God when they feel that they are so broken that they cannot do that on their own. I also believe that by using theology combined with psychology, I can show clients that we are just like those who were going through trials and suffering in the Bible. This brings me to what I believe is a fine line between using empirical research that is not biblically based and not compromising my biblical beliefs. Whatever research I adopt needs to be aligned with my beliefs, but not necessarily Christian based (the area that I have a hard time with) before I can use it with my clients.
