Promoting Harmony Reflection Perhaps the hardest part about being a middle school teacher is teaching young adolescents who are dealing with physical, emotional, intellectual, and social changes. Young adolescents may not be as focused on learning in the classroom as elementary school students because they have more going on with their bodies and their mind. It is up to the teacher to acknowledge the changes their students are undergoing and to try to guide them when they can. Social development is another change that can impact a young adolescent 's ability to learn and focus. Many young adolescents care greatly what their peers think of them. “If they feel rejected, they may invest an inordinate amount of time and energy on social matters to compensate for their sense of inadequacy, leaving less time for academic concerns” (Strahan et al. 76). Because of this need to fit in, peer pressure becomes an issue and students are tempted to give in to their peers. The formation of cliques is also a common theme in middle school, as students try to find a group of people like them so they can relate. Likewise, if a student does not fit into a peer group, then they feel left out. The authors of Promoting Harmony make it clear that young adolescents need security, success, and support. It is important for teachers to provide a safe and inviting classroom environment to provide security, success, and support to their students. By reading Promoting Harmony, future teachers can learn how to create a safe and positive space for students and to encourage young adolescents to branch out and to not give into peer pressure.
