An estimated 88,000 people die due to alcohol related incidents in the U.S. each year (WELLWVU). This is the fourth most preventable cause of death in the United States and kills thousands of underage citizens each year. These numbers are not declining but yet people are proposing the country lowers the legal drinking age? After looking at statistics from the U.S. and how other countries are affected by their legal drinking ages one would come to a conclusion that 21 is an appropriate age for the United States. Since young adults have the responsibility of making their own decisions, and consuming alcohol is one of them, but due to binge drinking, impaired driving, and increased crime rates, alcohol should be off limits to those under the age of 21.
In most states around the U.S. 18 years of age is known as the “age of majority”. This declares that individuals can make their own decisions. Eighteen is also the year minors can officially call themselves adults. Adults are able to make their own decisions and whether or not they consume alcohol should be one of them. If eighteen became the new drinking age, would safer drinkers develop? Some people think so. "Return the drinking age to 18 -- and then enforce the law.
