Protein Power
1. Description
Met-Rx can be used as a meal supplement or meal companion. It is mostly used by body builders in order to build body mass. It is packaged in the form of food bars or powdered shakes. (www.metrx.com/tutorials-and-quiz/quiz.html) The purpose of this treatment is to "support protein synthesis, energy production, and fat utilization" (www.met-rx.com/faq/default.htm). The ingredients contained in these combinations allow the body to acquire all the necessary nutrients for maximum metabolic effect.
2. Types of Protein Supplements
Shakes are used so that the time consuming calorie counting, etc. can be avoided. They are also designed to "maximize the oxidation and storage

These products are sold without FDA approval of safety or effectiveness. In a study done by the Department of Exercise Science at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, an increase in body mass due to protein supplements was "most likely water retention in muscle but could also be due to some new muscle protein"(Clarkson 1999). Though athletes need more protein to keep a nitrogen balance, it is easily obtained in a normal diet. The Department of Pharmacy at Shands Hospital concludes that "protein supplementation can lead to dehydration, gout, liver and kidney damage, calcium loss, and gastrointestinal effects"(Beltz 1993).
4. Protein Supplement and Athletes/Bodybuilders
Scientists have proven that the break down of protein in amino acids are needed in the build up of muscle. As a result, Met-Rx contains whey protein, metamyosyn, as well as other proteins. Athletes and Bodybuilders are looking for a way to increase muscle mass, increase endurance, or reduce body fat without damaging their bodies like using steroids, etc. Protein supplements give them the added amino acids for muscle build up, however; "the normal dietary intake of protein is adequate for athletes as long as the energy intake is sufficient to maintain body weight" (Dohm 1984). In a study by the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Houston, a clinical trial showed that "growth hormones were significantly elevated during resting
The best-selling protein shakes are all based on milk proteins. Protein in its powdered form is also much lighter than a full meal. This comes into play when the protein shake is taken as a pre-workout. In that case, it is much better to eat a lighter shake before a HIT or high intensity training regimen, otherwise the contents of your meal may end up on the gym floor instead of being absorbed for nutrients.
It is concluded that most of college going athletes have nutritional knowledge and they consume calcium supplements and weight gain supplements very frequently and lack of time is the most responsible factor for their nutrition intake.
The biological value in whey protein enhances the body’s ability to absorb essential amino acids after resistance training decreasing the athlete’s recovery time. When athletes combine whey protein and creatine monohydrate they expect “a greater increase in lean tissue mass and muscular strength than supplementations with whey protein alone” (Burke, Chilibeck, Davison, Candow, Farthing, & Smith-Palmer 2001, p 350). Exogenous Cr supplementation increases the body’s Cr levels until saturation occurs. This saturation of Cr increases the PCK shuttle continuum allowing training intensity, volume, and duration of the exercise the athlete is performing to continue at a maximum rate. Any excess Cr in the blood is cleared through sweat, urination or renal filtration. Measurements in strength and peak torques of athletes supplementing with whey protein and creatine monohydrate (WC), whey protein (W), and a placebo (P) were taken. According to Burke et al, (2001) “repeated measure analysis of variance was used to assess changes in body composition, strength, and peak torque for the three groups (WC vs. W vs. P) across time” (p. 354). A twelve week strength training program was constructed and consisted of a “4-day split routine involving whole body musculature” (Burke et al, 2001. p 352). Subjects used detailed training logs to compare progress over the 12 week experiment. The end result from this experiment shows that subjects who “supplemented with both creatine and whey
The evidence I will provide is strictly scientific, the information comes from the Journal of Sports Nutrition. The article is written by Richard B. Kreider, Exercise & Sport Nutrition Laboratory Department of Human Movement Sciences and Education The University of Memphis. The author has many credentials, such as his testing of finding the effects of six weeks of creatine monohydrate supplementation in male and female track athletes, which can be found in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning. All of his research is peer reviewed.
“Many nutritional/dietary supplements contain NCAA banned substances. In addition, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not strictly regulate the supplement industry; therefore purity and safety of nutritional/dietary supplements cannot be guaranteed. Impure supplements may lead to a positive NCAA drug test. The use of supplements is at the student-athelete’s own risk” (Nslabaugh). There are no dietary supplements that are approved anywhere.
He is explaining the most recent findings on creatine. Phosphocreatine is the most common form of creating found in humans because it is able to buffer ADP. Research has played with different loading and cycling methods of creatine and find that it takes 4-6 weeks of muscle creating stores to decline after loading. Based on these studies, scientists found that with short-term supplementation of creatine, the athletes body mass can increase up to 2kg in the first week, the maximal power and strength are increased, work performance is enhanced, and sprint performance is increased in both single sprints and repetitions of sprints. When athletes supplement for long periods of time, it can increase gains
I'm writing this because I was hired by an organization called Campus Protein. They offer supplements, protein powders, and other fitness and nutrition related items. They have pre-workouts, protein shakes, recovery formulas, and more. They have items for people who are wanting to lose weight, gain weight, or even people just wanting to maintain their weight.
One of the most widely used supplements by athletes is creatine. Creatine phosphate is an important energy source during brief, high-intensity activities and is important in rapid recovery (Creatine: MedlinePlus Supplements and Maughan, Depiesse, & Geyer, 2007). “There is substantial evidence to show that creatine supplementation can increase the amount of creatine and creatine phosphate in the muscles and can improve performance in strength and power events” (Maughan, Depiesse, & Geyer, 2007).
They discuss a few different studies that have been down, one of which was done by adding protein to a carbohydrate sports drink. In this study cyclists were given the carbohydrate sports drink, a placebo or the carbohydrate sports drink spiked with protein. In this study it was found that there was no benefit to having the additional protein in the drink during exercise. And although there have been studies with opposite results, they have yet to replicated (Gibala). They also discuss the importance of athletes finding receiving the best information when they are conducting their own research when it comes to protein. They suggest that athletes find credible sources when using the Internet and/or finding a certified
Tren Xtreme, Mass Xtreme, and Estro Xtreme are among the supplements cited by the FDA as containing steroid-like substances. Under the law, dietary supplements are defined as, “products that contain minerals and herbs, and do not claim to prevent, mitigate, or cure specific illnesses” (Shmidt par.15). Thus, the FDA recommends and lists regular, legal foods, which are effective in gaining muscle mass and weight loss. These foods are listed: cottage cheese, lean ground beef, soy, eggs, chicken, fish, and vegetables. Lastly, Andrew Shao, the vice president for the Science and Regulation Council of Responsible Nutrition, working with the FDA, states that “it is very difficult to ban all substances proven illegal in an industry that strives off of them, making 2.8 billion dollars in sales every year” (Shmidt par.17). They cannot apprehend everyone who takes dietary supplements and anabolic steroids, but are doing their best to make a difference by promoting healthier ways to maintain a well and safe structured body.
Creatine monohydrate, whey protein isolate and branch-chained amino acids may all sound like substances illegally whipped up in a lab by a bald man with a beard who dubs himself Heisenberg. However, they are all natural and legal substances that have been on the market since the 1950s and help athletes get the right amount of nutrients each day and the right benefits to aid them with their training. - The article claims that all the protein in the shakes would help Kelly build muscle, "making her stronger and speeding up her metabolism" (Saible, 2017)
Along with this, supplement manufacturers are not required to wait for FDA safety approval before adding new ingredients to their product. As a result of no oversight some companies chose to put compounds in their products such as androstenedione a growth hormone that although legal poses a “health risk similar to steroids” (Dr. Robert Brackett). Which is a primary reason why it is banned by many sports organizations throughout the
Many people benefits from protein and amino acid supplements because it helps them monitor their blood pressure, cholesterol level, and reduce their chances of having chronic disease. It does help many athletes stay healthy and ready for their daily activity. I think some athletes eat a lot of food that has protein in it. What is good about protein supplement is that they are in most of the food that we eat everyday, and that helps us to stay focus in class. Protein and amino acid supplement is good for the body and it also helps children who are living in underdevelopment country. The bad thing about it is that too much of protein and amino acid supplement can cause health complication in the body. People can become easily addict to protein
