1. Describe the evolution of the field of industrial/organizational psychology. A person should consider I/O psychology as a science because of its use of scientific research and its practice and because of its use of descriptive and inferential statistics (Spector, 2012), “I/O psychologists do many different jobs in a wide variety of settings” (p. 6). One divides I/O settings into two areas of concern, which are scientific research and practice. The research area provides certain principles, which one applies in practice. The activity of practice involves using psychological principles for solving problems of the real-world. Scientific research and practice are both important in I/O psychology. I/O psychologist perform studies were the requirements of statistical methods are necessary for analysis of data. Statistical methods are used to perform studies are descriptive and inferential statistics. I/O psychologists use descriptive statistics for summarizing study results. I/O psychologists use inferential statistics for the purpose of interpreting the results of studies by using different statistical tests.
3. Discuss the influence industrial/organization psychology has had on organizations. Provide examples.

14. Evolutionary theories often emphasize that humans have adapted to their physical environment. One such theory hypothesizes that people should spontaneously follow a 24-hour cycle of sleeping and waking—even if they are not exposed to the usual pattern of sunlight. To test this notion, eight paid volunteers were placed (individually) in a room in which there was no light from the outside and no clocks or other indications of time. They could turn the lights on and off as they wished. After a month in the room, each individual tended to develop a steady cycle. Their cycles at the end of the study were as follows: 25, 27, 25, 23,24, 25, 26, and 25.

When it comes to the scientific method, especially in the science of psychology, there are many different ways a question can be asked in order to get the conclusion to a hypothesis. Psychology is by its nature something that not only produces many questions but also helps to find the answer to those questions. Through asking the right questions a person can see a whole new world of understanding unfold before them. This understanding of why a person or animal acts the way it does has been groundbreaking in the growth of understanding a individual on a much deeper level than the sociological standpoint. Psychology is a discipline that involves monitoring mental processes and behaviour scientifically. Psychologists try to delve into the basic functions of a person and animals cerebral activity. This usually involves studying relationships, emotions, personality and many more areas of a person or animals day to day life. Psychology tends to steer towards finding reasons for a person or animals actions in an attempt to resolve them.

There has been an ongoing debate on whether psychology is indeed scientific, although recent, psychology is now considered a science. This is because it uses scientific methodology in researching, devising treatments and measuring the outcomes. These methods include collecting and analysing data and concluding their findings in order to identify whether the research or treatment adequality solves the problem. Scientific studies must be replicable, this means the if repeated exactly the same, the results should produce an identical outcome. Replicability can be increased by ruling out any alternatives that may not have originally been thought of. Industrial organizational psychology is a field of psychology concerned with the application of psychological theories and doctrine to organizations. This field concentrates on improving workplace output and interrelated issues such as the mental and physical welfare of employees. Experts in the industrial organizational field offer a wide variety of services including investigating worker attitudes and conduct, assessing companies, and perform leadership training exercises. The overall objective of this discipline is to investigate and comprehend human behavior in the office. Occupational issues bear great significance to psychologists, given that most employees spend the majority of their adult lives working in offices. Work acts as the defining factor for all human beings making it an important subject to study (Avsec, 2010: Weinberg, Sutherland, Cooper, & Palgrave Connect, 2010). Other related issues that are of interest to psychologists include correlating between the right job and individual character set and discovering new methods of lowering workplace stress.
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate how functionalism and cognitive psychology align with Industrial/Organizational (I/O) psychology, and defend the use functionalism and cognitive psychology, schools of thought to support the research topic on the effect of technological advancements, such as avatars, holograms, and computer/web-based instruction in employee training and development. It is important everything we learned in the Industrial Organizational Psychology class because it relates to the workplace in different aspects and the employees, managements and I can apply it in the workplace. I/O psychology is “scientific study” of the human behaviour in the workplace and the organization as a whole (Scheute & Coetzee, 2010). Its purpose is to create an better work environment for workers and at the same time assure productivity for the business, but many people today even I/O psychologist themselves are not able to describe what is the purpose of a I/O psychologist and give the reason why they are needed in the work industry. This essay will therefore persuade the reader that organizations need to employ I/O psychologists because the skills and expertise obtained by a particular individual in I/O psychology will be useful for the long term productivity of an industry and those skills will also insure the long term wellbeing of the employees.
