Do you ever look around and notice a particular fashion style of those around you? Perhaps, you’ve noticed someone driving an expensive car and wonder to yourself what makes it worth all of the money spent on it. We live in a consumer driven society in America today where everything from the outfit you choose to wear to the car you drive is influenced by advertisement. Just how much does it dictate our perception of life? I will be analyzing the staggering psychological and societal effects that advertisers have over our culture today. I will be looking at advertising’s origins and showing how it developed to become one of the main contributors to what is considered to be normal and desirable in American culture today. Advertisers have successfully employed methods of psychology to shape the minds of their consumers and construct a world that fattens their pocket books while leaving the average consumer dumbfounded to the advertisement’s effects. My goal is to educate the consumer about these methods thereby empowering them to see past the façade and decide for themselves what they need and want from the world.

To truly understand the present the way advertising negatively affects American society, one must look at its past. For as long as there has been money, there has been competition to obtain it. Different methods have been employed in attempts to turn the consumer’s attention towards a product in hopes of getting some of this ever coveted money.
Every day, companies present the people with advertisements everywhere they go. Advertisements have become very prevalent in today’s society nowadays focusing in on a negative connotation. Advertisement has become an effective way for producers to display their new products. In present day, they come in forms of billboards, flyers, e-mails, and even text messages. It is widely known that companies create advertisements to persuade people to buy specific products or goods; however, it is not widely known that advertisements can make a negative impact on today’s society. The companies manipulate people’s mind and emotions, swaying people by new promotions and therefore generating a strong desire to fit into the society, that causes them to make inessential expenditures. Billboards on the way to work, ads on the internet, and paper products such as magazines or newspapers display a sale or a promotion of a good or service.
