Part of my motivation to pursue a PhD stems from the fact that growing up I did not know that “researcher” expanded beyond beakers and chemistry experiments. After learning that populations that I am surrounded by are not frequently studied, realizing that research influences policies, and knowing that my population is constantly policed, I knew this is where I needed to be. Entering college, I thought I would leave wanting to be a Pediatric Oncologist. I love youth and I love my grandma whom I watched survive Breast Cancer and it just seemed like the logical thing for me to pursue. Since I was a child I have seen kids in my environment be told they would either be a negative statistic or a doctor. Once I got to college and through experiences with traveling, community-based work, and researching, I have realized that there are so many more ways to help people’s health than being a medical doctor.

My interest in psychology was sparked in high school by my psychology teacher, Mr. Cromwell. He was very passionate about the subject and very eager for us to learn. I still remember him acting out the process of a synaptic transmission. He was the first teacher that actively prepared me to be successful in college. He lectured like nobody’s business, never “dumbed” down the material, and his exams were always essay questions (which I can confidently say were harder than some of my exams in college). It was in his AP class, I first realized my curiosity of the mechanics of the human brain. After school, he would let me come back to his class and examine his preserved slices of brain and riffle through his massive collection of resource books.

All throughout high school I thought I would go to school to focus on law, but after having experiences with the field of psychology I felt like this was what I was meant to do. My junior year I started the Regional Choice Initiative (RCI). This program allowed me to take college courses for credit while still attending high school (IU5). Every Tuesday and Thursday I would take classes through Gannon University – two of which were psychology courses. I had the same professor for both.

Psychologists are very important people; they help millions of people with their everyday struggles and problems that they have to deal with. Not only do psychologists help people with problems that they cannot handle on their own, they also are scientists who study human minds and behaviors.
