The LGBT Community is more than just a community for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. In many aspects, it’s more than a simple so-called community, for some it’s a safe place and for others it’s a family. If you dig just a little deeper sexuality as a whole is a lot more than you think it is. No one is really on the inside aware of what’s going on. Instead they’re just on the outside looking in. In other words, no one sees deep down all they see is the surface. Even though not many understand sexuality many look down upon it some even praise it without knowing because they don’t over complicate the subject or could care less about the matter.

This community consists of transgender individuals, a general term to describe those who do not conform to typical gender roles, transsexuals who desire to be recognized as a member of the opposite sex, and transvestites who dress in clothing associated with the opposite gender. This topic will be examined with the socio conflict approach, and therefore critical sociology, due to the inequalities that have arisen in most cultures throughout the existence of the modern world, and the early modern world. Before 1960 homosexuality was not accepted in any sense in Canada, or the United Sates. Homosexuality was labeled by mental health professionals as a sickness, and a means for being

Our culture and society is evolving every day and there is a wide range of societal attitudes and opinions towards gay individuals today. Many believe that society should accept gay people whereas there are others who are firmly against the “gay culture” in society. In a scientific context, there is a wide range of debate as to whether or not biology has a potential influence in giving rise to gay individuals or if it is solely an environmental impact or even an interaction of both factors. Many researchers have presented evidence for and against the different types of influences in the growing number of the gay society.
Brandon Boso, female to male transgender, was eleven when he came out to his parents as transgender. From Brooklyn to Brandon, his parents were skeptical and did not want to accept him as Brandon. Fights broke out and yelling became an everyday occurrence. In an interview, he states, “One day my mom came into my room screaming that I wasn’t a boy and I wasn’t gay because I had said that I still liked guys” (Boso). Although his family became more supportive as he became older, he still had to deal with the backlash from his family while most of his friends were supportive. This is the case for many individuals in the LGBT community who are afraid of coming out to their family. Coming out to your family and friends can be and is a crucial point in someone’s life. The process of coming out and how this affects personal relationships, the break in communication between them and their parents, the toll this takes on them emotionally and mentally while transitioning as well are all key pieces to the coming out as transgender process and also the transition. While some may think that coming out as transgender is an easy decision, people do not take into consideration that coming out as transgender to your parents, family and friends can be emotional, terrifying, and can lead to suicidal thoughts. This process is key in the development of the rest of these teens life and can lead to serious problems with self-esteem and self-acceptance.
Homosexuality is a trending topic especially with the issue of gay marriage in Utah. As a heterosexual college woman, I have received negative and positive messages about homosexual orientation. Large amounts of adverse criticism concerning the issue began in my town and school. Most supporting messages came later in life, specifically attending college and moving to Salt Lake City. And while there seems to be a shift in societal views towards positive connotations regarding gay and lesbian, some negatives still hold power. Particularly, homosexual relationships and people are bad.

The term LGBTQ, standing for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer or some sources say "Questionable" for example, have stemmed from political changes. From previous rejections of narrowing identity politics of just the standard Gay there has been a move to include people that acknowledge themselves as bi and trans for example. This is a complete opposite approach compared to the “reclaiming” of words such as "queer", or “slut” that was used in the “SlutWalk” protests a couple years ago. The assumption is these changes in language have an
Understanding the terminology of the LGBT community is often complicated. LGBT, which was once known as the “gay community,” is an acronym that describes different gender expression or identities. The acronym was created to be more inclusive and have more diverse groups. It allowed individuals of the LGBT community to fully express themselves in different ways.
LGBT which stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, are people who have their own gender and sexual preference. There is an estimated 3.5% of adults in the United States who identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual and an estimated 0.3% of adults who are transgender (Gate, “How many people are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender?”) There are cases such as Freddie Mason, Bernina Mata, and Duanna Johnson, which are some events that embellish a long shadow of criminalization of LGBT people in the United States. They are discriminated within their jobs, in housing, within the government, and even going into public places. The LGBT community is no different, so why are they seen just for their sexual preference? There needs to be a change, a change in which would provide better and safer lives for the LGBT community. In saying this, Congress should create a law which will abolish discrimination, and ensure civil protections for the LGBT community.
