On the radio broadcast “A Bootstraps America,” host Kerri Miller is joined by Stephen Henderson and Linda Tirado, with a purpose of exposing the ‘bootstrap myth.’ Viewers and listeners are invited to phone-in with their comments and thoughts regarding the American Dream, a highly debated topic. Three quotes from the broadcast stood out to me. The first quote that got my attention was “pull yourself up by your bootstraps.” From my belief, you’re the only one who can determine your success in life. Everybody is responsible for their achievement of the American dream. Although most people have a different perception of it, the main idea is the success in life. From my point of view, everybody is equal. Therefore, each and every person is given an equal opportunity to become successful. I do not understand how gender, race, religion, or even someone’s socioeconomic status can determine their future. An individual with integrity, along with a clear sense of what they want, will have a good chance achieving anything they put their mind to. In addition, a driven person with motivation to take those steps will be not far away from the American dream. The last quote that caught my attention was, “I feel like they have a different view on how success can be made” (Henderson). I have to agree with Henderson on this one. The little things that we take for granted today, people long ago had to work much harder for. Not having the advantages we have in present time, working hard was necessary in order to survive; there was no just getting by.
