Each of us possess personal characteristic strengths that makes each of us unique. As individuals these strengths allow us to add value to all of our relationships both personally and professionally. For many of us, we can recognize the characteristics and how they add value to lives, unfortunately though many of us will struggle voicing these strengths openly during job interviews, performance evaluations, or team meetings. One of the first challenges is to understand that we are all lifelong learners and it is through these experiences that we develop these strengths which allows us to become an essential part of a relationship whether it is a personal or professional relationship. As within the realm of a Human Resource Professional the ability to recognize these strengths in people we must also recognize them within ourselves so that we may leverage those skills to advocate for both the employee and the organization. Throughout my life, my strengths have tended to gain more clarity and centered on my profession because form many of the majority of our time is spent there. Character is the mental and moral qualities distinctive to every individual. Although what our peers think of us really doesn’t matter, we sometimes tend to get sucked into trying to please someone else. Therefore you can lose yourself while doing so. To not fall into that trap, it’s important to set lifetime goals to be the best person you can be, it will get you further. People will notice your qualities that stand out, you have to cling to your moral values and what’s best.

What is character? Character is something that is hard to explain. It is who we are, the way we act, and the kind of person we truly are and want to be. Character is what you are in the dark. But if character is the kind of person you are when no one is looking, then why does it matter? Character matters because even when we think no one is looking, they are. People are always watching us and the way we behave and many will look to us in admiration and inspiration, so it is our job to constantly be a role model of good character. There are many character traits that make someone successful in life. Some traits you are born with, other traits are mindsets. There are a few character traits that coaches, teachers, bosses, or any other significant figure looks for in particular. One of the most important character traits is a hard-working attitude. You aren’t born with a hard-working attitude. It is a mindset. You may not be the best employee, but an employer will be more willing to work with someone that works hard than someone that can do the job but is lazy. Although I am not the best at everything, I give 100% effort in everything that I do and believe that working hard is the most important trait a person can possess.

As a growing debate, the question at hand is whether great leaders are born with specific leadership traits, or if one can be taught certain traits over time. According to (Wikipedia.com) the approach of listing leadership qualities, often termed "trait theory of leadership", assumes certain traits or characteristics will tend to lead to effective leadership. I believe that leadership traits such as honest, competent, initiative, inspiring, hardworking, intelligent, and the ability to lead the masses, are some of the leadership traits one should possess. From an early age I learned that our very best is often brought to action when we willingly take on challenges and persevere with grace through trying times. As a widowed, single mother, my mom strove for excellence in every area of her life in order to put food on the table for her children. She studied to be a nurse, quickly rose in to administration, became the first in our family to obtain a Masters in Business Administration (MBA), and earned a seat as a director for an international healthcare organization. Knowing yourself and what you can do, can help you recognize and overcome your weaknesses.

Confidence, communication and commitment are just three of many traits that a leader possesses. Having those traits may help you become a leader but continuous hard work and dedication makes you one. To continue to be a leader you must also be intelligent, courageous, and determined. Becoming a leader is difficult but continuing to be one is even more difficult.

An individual’s effectiveness in the workplace often depends on his/her personality, attitudes and values, along with his/her motivation to succeed. Concurrently, the perception, attitudes and values of colleagues in the workplace play a role in determining the individual’s effectiveness. Understanding these characteristics of employees can be very crucial for organizations to operate successfully. At the same time, it is essential that employees understand the values associated with the organization in order to avoid any conflicting feelings toward the work they are employed to do. By recognizing and appreciating each other’s characteristics and constraints, employees and the organizations they are part of, form a highly-beneficial
