The concept of recognizing Quebec as a distinct society is an idea that has been kicking around for some time, but just what does it mean and what are its broader implications? This paper will examine the origins of the term, what it means, and its historical context. It will then examine rival interpretations of federalism. The essay will conclude with an in-depth examination of the concept's involvement with the failed constitutional accords and the failed Quebec succession attempts.
Since British Settlers took control of Canada from the French, the needs of the remaining French Canadians, or Quebecois, have consequently been overlooked. Several events in Canadian History have resulted in heated feelings between French and English Canadians. Although the majority of English Canadians have tried to reconcile with the French by making numerous attempts to mend the relationship, questions relating to the needs of French Canadians still exists today. Various key sources indefinitely establish that the that the needs of French Canadians were not met, which will be proven through an in depth analysis of Quebecois Nationalism, Heritage Problems in Quebec, as well as impending acts of terrorism in Quebec.
The final section of this paper deals with recognition. Sovereigntists feel that Quebec needs to be recognized since it is a distinct nation, as shown above, but that Canada refuses to do so. Federalists argue that Canada has already given Quebec recognition for its distinctness.
Québec’s strong national identity inevitably creates a visceral perception of themselves that excludes other cultural groups (Cook 21). While the French and English are locked in conflict, First Nation advances for self-determination are overshadowed. Many choose to forget, but the land and territories that are disputed over by separatists are still, fundamentally, First Nations, and are not subject to claims of sovereignty. (“First Nations Weigh in on Québec Sovereignty Debate” 5).
This book contains several volumes about the Aboriginal languages spoken in Quebec. It demonstrates how the Quebec government has initiated policies on the languages in comparison with the Canadian federal government. Since both Quebec and NWT share some common aboriginal languages such as Inuktitut and Cree I would like to compare and contrast both the Quebec and NWT’s language planning fields as one is the largest province in Canada and the other is a territory with lower amount of language speakers than Quebec. Also, the book argues that standardizing the Quebec aboriginal languages is needed, as there are three different language families in nine languages that construct huge complexities across dialects, writings and grammatical systems.
This article discusses how Quebec's Minster of Culture is interested in following France's lead on fighting anorexia. She stated, "It inspires me a lot". Similar to France the Minster would create voluntary charter that focuses on awareness around anorexia and positive body image. The question of whether Quebec will secede from Canada to become an independent nation has been a hot topic in the country for several years now. It dates back to the abortive rebellions of 1837-38. In 1980, a referendum to secede was rejected by a 60-40 margin. Since then though, the numbers of Quebeckers that want to become sovereign has significantly increased. There is so many questions of what will happen if this does happen. In this paper I plan to take a deeper look at this situation and try to figure out what it would actually be like if Quebec was its own country.
During the twentieth century, Canada as a nation witnessed and endured several historical events that have had a deep and profound influence on Canadian politics. The most influential and constant force in twentieth century Canadian politics has been the increasing power and command of Quebec nationalism and the influence it has had on Canadian politics today. Quebec nationalism has shaped the structure and dynamics of Canadian federalism from a centralized to a decentralized form of federal government (Beland and Lecours 2010, 423). The decentralization of several sectors within the Canadian government has been a direct effect of Quebec nationalism. Decentralization has led to more autonomy among the provincial governments, especially in
In understanding body politics and spatial struggles, one cannot neglect the concept of identity and what it means. The history of modern Canada has its history deep in migration and settlement; from the aboriginal peoples, to the French and later British. Over the years, discussions have entered academia with the aim of defining an understanding Canadian culture and identity. This project was aimed at finding artists who has work that deals with this and established themselves in this field.
Canada is prevised as one of the world’s most diverse countries. What makes Canada so diverse is the fact that they welcome a lot of foreigners with open arms. A lot of people seek North American citizenship to be free from their communist abiding countries and to explore the many opportunities Canada and American have to offer. With all this diversity comes with some conflicting issues such as personal life beliefs, prejudice and unacceptance into certain communities. In the short stories “I’m a Banana and Proud of It” written by Wayson Choy and “Growing up Native” written by Carole Geddes explores the life of two individuals and their upbringing in diverse Canada and some of the hardships times they face.
This paper will explore the association between Quebeckers and how much the average Quebecker really likes Canada on a scale from really dislike (0) to really like (100). This association is relevant because the history of division between Quebec and the rest of Canada has resulted in many referendums and resentment that thrives today as much as it did in the past. The results may not be shocking, but the empirical data analysis shows that the average Quebecker does not really like Canada when the threshold for ‘really like’ is set at 80 or more out of 100. The rest of this paper will thoroughly look at the steps that it took to reach this conclusion including a descriptive summary of the methodological considerations, a detailed

There are many ways to look at situations, places, or people in this world. Keeping this in mind, one ought to realise that different strokes may well be for different folks. One of the many resourceful and effective manners of doing so would be to look at what constitutes a subject as this allows for one to understand how it functions as well as how it is put together from within the inside out. In Canada’s case, this may be applied when asking the widespread question: “Should Quebec be recognized as a ‘distinct society’ in the constitution similar to the agreement known as the Meech Lake Accord in 1987?” The French province of Canada should be led to separation as this would undoubtedly have major implications on the fates of all factions
