Race continue to be an issue in the United States even in the military. The way people were raised, also affects the judgement and how the person will react in any racial situation. The glass ceiling continues to be an issue in this days because it affects women and all minority groups. For example, in my squadron, if leadership does not look at you as a future leader because the way you speak or accent and because you are outspoken, it can affect you to get promoted. This year was my last chance to get promoted and I got over looked even though I have an Associate’s degree and 4 classes away from my Bachelor’s degree which the other members did not had. One person that got promoted got coin from the Command Chief just because he attend to
That is one of the reasons I joined the military because there are still clear lines of division in race even in the military. The clear line I speak of is then majority Minority derive on the enlisted side of the military. I feel that it is my duty to form ignorant of ways to still be effective and serve our people. I will be a military officer and the new future and I only hope then I can have at least at a third of What this omega Man has
The first and most crucial step to solving an issue is to recognize that the issue actually exists. Many people fail to recognize that race has a correlation to the way that a person is treated in their society. In many aspects of American society, a person's race is a major determinant to how they are treated. Race impacts the way a person is treated in the workplace, by police and in the doctor’s office. Race grants privilege to those who it
Poole & Regoli (1980) utilize a quantitative study focusing on the assessment of the effects of race and officer’s decision-making. The race variable was separated into white=0 and black=1 categories. The authors presented their results in two statistics table. The first statistic table provided the correlation matrix, means, and standard deviations for the variables. The second table included beta coefficients, unstandardized regression coefficients, and standard errors for the relationship between the variables. The data described the relationship between race and disciplinary reports. The results concluded that blacks and younger black inmates are more likely to have a prior record of rule violations than white inmates. Having a prior record
of life. However, a major issue which arises with this increasing diversity is race, a topic which
Propelled by the civil rights movement of the 1960s and to counteract a national policy of segregation and inequality, the Department of Defense (DoD) mandated race relations training in 1971. The violent and nonviolent disorders of the late 1960s were the catalyst that convinced military leaders that race relations education must be provided to every member of the Armed Forces.
The United States Army is a gigantic institute with an international presence. One of its fundamental sources of power is the diversity of its personnel, which includes 1.6 million workforce across the active, reserve, civilian, and contractor parts. While the Army was at the vanguard of ethnic incorporation in the 1950s and at present is one of the most assorted institutes in the U.S., further advancement must be made on the diversity front. The term "diversity" can be classified along countless aspects; this paper concentrates on racial diversity since the exceptional and traditionally important role that race has in matters of diversity in the Army. Internal communications concerning delegate leadership throughout the force, the Army sketches power from its cultural and racial diversity.
When applying to be an officer, or any profession for that matter, every aspect of you is being observed. When talking about race, I believe that there should be no barriers, all men are created equally, and it was be ignorant to turn someone down
Since the beginning of USA history people of color were never treated equally and this has affected the
Extra! Extra! Read all about it, racial injustice is all around us, who’s going to stand up and fight it?! America has always had troubles with racial problems, even after the signing of the Civil Rights Act that was passed in 1964. Even with the Civil Rights being passed there is still racial injustice happing currently. There are schools that are poorly funded that have majority nonwhite children, and people that have “nonwhite sounding” names who are being turned down for jobs; not only is this unfair and wrong, but it causes the people to look for alternate ways to fix the racial problems that are being displayed; which could lead to another racial war if lead by the wrong people. It’s fair to ask if the
It wasn’t until I earned a few college degrees that the military would even entertain my packets for promotion where I was station. Once I realized my ignorance regarding not just racism but also sexism I found myself encouraging minorities to obtain an education in order to compete. As Spencer (2008) said in his article “education and employment opportunity, he was made in his opinion palatable to the dominant culture.” This article compels me to think of situations from my past life experiences. It amazed me how much I overlooked some hurdles that I overcame when it comes to racism and/or sexism. My reflection involved my critical thinking skills to determine if I deliberately block it out or did I truly forget. I found myself questioning my experience and opportunity to search for new perspectives and new solutions if
In the IT world you are judged off of your experience. My age has limited my chance for experience. So, in the IT world where I am surrounded by 30-45 year old men who have been doing the job way longer than I have, my voice isn’t heard much. The ideas I pitch get crumpled up and thrown away. I feel like a henchman who comes up with a great idea; then, my boss comes and takes credit for the thinking of it first. There was one time where their discrimination against me blinded them from seeing something really important, and they regretted it.
The fight for racial equality is a worldwide battle that will never end due to humans striving to become superior to all other races, genders, and religions; peace movements, and civil rights movements pushed to advance the world's mindset that all humans are equal and should be treated as such. However, political propaganda and other sources of media fuels the public into boosting the country's support for their military while degrading their opponents.
Although the issue of race relations has died down since the civil rights movement, it is still present in politics and the work place today. Race relations works to better the rights of minority citizens and to lessen the gap between the races. With the facts stated above, race relations are an important issue in the United States of America. Race is a much discussed social and political topic. Race, especially in the United States is everybody’s business. Profiling is evident today, where going to an airport can be a hassle if you fit a certain stereotype. But race relations have come a long way. It has changed vastly from the time of the civil rights movement. We have to remember that the recognition of an injustice and public outcry will change nothing until we understand completely the issues that bring about these events. We have to be careful when dealing with this issue; we have to be contributing to part of the solution rather than the being the problem itself. Injustice could be the turning point in which we transform and open up to the media and investigate our racial assumptions. In todays’ day and age, fear is fostered in the danger of pretending to seek justice when action isn’t taken. Race relations can be resolved if we approach the problem correctly and effectively on appropriate terms.
However, the worst internalized against Cultural/ethnicity is the unseen discrimination, is when you receive it from your on cultural/ethnicity group. Military black men and women are very competitive. However, observation is when blacks are in authorities of other blacks made to think blacks could do nothing correct. Each time a black man was in authority I have to fight to just to keep my rank or position. Once stationed in Germany, this black male came in to the facility and started cursing me out. However, I did not say one word. He asked me if I had written up a soldier. I replied no, she wrote herself up and she did and gave me the counseling statement. He wrote me up and said that I had cursed him out. I had a black female soldier who was in my unit and in charge of me. She was not anywhere in the building; however, her and the male got together
It appears to be that the discussion of race and class in America has become amplified, especially in the last couple of years. For many, it is a touchy subject that hits close to home. With the presence of social media and news that feeds off of racial tension in America, the issues are polarizing and difficult to productively discuss. America’s handling of race and class relations is generally not something to be proud of, and there exists a long history of issues with race. It is clear that there is a lack of understanding and empathy of what others experience toward those who are oppressed. So often it is too easy to dismiss another human’s experiences as reality if one has had no prior encounter with the same challenges. Race is easy to sweep under the rug, but we must address the problem, and it is not a one size fits all solution. It is a problem that has been years in the making and continues to have an enormous impact on our human capital from an economic standpoint. And most of the time, there is a correlation between race and class.
