In Rachel Giese’s article, “How Energy-Drink Companies Prey on Male Insecurities” (2015), she addresses that energy-drinks companies are using different kind of tactics such as using super athletes who drink energy beverages to fool insecure men into using their products to make them feel manlier. However, these energy drinks had a bad influence on people’s health both psychologically and physically. In fact, drinking energy beverages can cause sleep disturbance in the long run. Giese is a deputy editor in the grid, and that is after she was an award-winning writer and editor throughout her career. Hence making it a logically effective method. She uses throughout her article the fact that energy-drinks had been consumed worldwide. In fact, according to the recent time report “the energy-drink market has been thriving. The beverages are consumed regularly by thirty-one per cent of kids between the ages of twelve and seventeen, and by thirty-four per cent of those aged eighteen to twenty-four. U.S. sales for energy drinks and shots now total more than twelve and a half billion dollars” (para.3, 2015). She proves a point that the sale of energy-drinks is on the rise to the point that even kids started drinking these kinds of beverages without adult supervision ignoring its bad influence on their bodies. Moreover, she includes quotations from researchers such as a Taiwanese paper that shows that young men drink lots of energy beverages when feeling insecure. Actually, they said in these exact words “regulate their personal sense of masculinity” (para.5, 2015). In fact, some of those young men truly assume that these energy drinks will make them manlier. I consider that using these quotes from well-known authorities or authors’ show that a lot of other authors and researchers believe in what she is saying, thus making readers very eager to read her article. I think this kind of supporting ideas makes this article more effective on the reader and makes them agree with the author because it gives something for the reader to relate to. For example, according to Giese (2015) “a fourteen-year-old boy in Norway was hospitalized with kidney failure after consuming four liters of energy drinks during a sixteen-hour Call of Duty session” (para.10) This example proves the fact that energy-drinks have bad effects when drinking it in big doses. Her usage of this particular event is very effective because it made other people feel really angry at these companies because they are risking young men’s health just to gain a little profit. This event made the readers sympathetic toward the family of that child and all the other victims of those outrageous acts which made them willing to join this cause with the author. Moreover, after approaching sixteen companies, she found out that only four of them avoid marketing their products to children (Giese, para 10, 2015). This fact made the author very disappointed with the industry since they are willing to risk these children’s lives just to gain profit.
