Billboards Post Racist Writings in Hopes of Stopping Them

A billboard campaign in Brazil is attempting to curb the posting of racist comments of Facebook by turning them into gigantic signs. The project takes real posts of a racist nature and puts them on billboards around the city. The campaign is named "Virtual racism, real consequences," and is putting the billboards in the location where the person who posted the comment lives. The caveat: the name and photo of the person who wrote the post are blurred out.

The Criola group, a nonprofit that works to defend the rights of black women in Brazil, said that the aim of the campaign is not to humiliate anybody, but to educate them and let them know that their words have consequences.

Some of the posts refer to her as "Preto" which is an offensive term directed towards blacks in Portuguese. Others were rude, "I got home stinking of black people," others vulgar "go f—k yourself", and others just mean, "If you showered, you wouldn't be so filthy."

The question has to be asked, but I'm not sure it has been, if most people did not know about these posts on Facebook, isn't is even worse to bring them out into the open where everyone can see them. It's bad enough that Coutinho had to see these posts once, but now she sees them in gigantic letters every day all over the city.

Since the names and faces are blocked out, is there really a lesson to be learned by having your post blown up and shown to the world, your anonymity intact. Granted, it might send the message to a few or the smarter ones that if they could put the sign in your neighborhood, then the next time they could expose you, but I would think these are not the brightest people to begin with. I just hope that this doesn't become an encouragement to the filthy minded to see who can get the worst comments blown up into a
