Rap music has become one of the most distinctive and controversial music genres of the past few decades. A major part of hip hop culture, rap, discusses the experiences and standards of living of people in different situations ranging from racial stereotyping to struggle for survival in poor, violent conditions. Rap music is a vocal protest for the people oppressed by these things. Most people know that rap is not only music to dance and party to, but a significant form of expression. It is a source of information that describes the rage of people facing growing oppression, declining opportunities for advancement, changing moods on the streets, and everyday survival. Music is an art that has united people all over the world for centuries and centuries. Evolving throughout the years, music is split up into many different genres. These genres have derived from diverse time periods and cultures throughout the years. Jazz and Country music both originated in the early 1900s, but have had lasting impacts on completely different cultures. The detailed elements of each piece are dissimilar, but are equally effective in providing entertainment for each audience.
Rapper beefs have been a huge part of the history of Hip-Hop. It has built and destroyed careers, made people money, lost people fortunes, changed the views of fans on their favorite artists , destroyed businesses and companies, and even cost people their lives. Beefs have brought people to the spotlight and sent others to the shadows. Hip-Hop wouldn’t be the same industry without rappers at each others throat every once in awhile. Some of the most iconic songs wouldn’t have been written if it weren’t for some feud with another rapper. It’s proven that beefs make and sell records and always leave people wanting more.
In addition to increasing awareness of issues that are going on in America, Hip Hop gives youth a needed outlet from their lives and an outlet for self-expression. Many hip hop artists rap and talk Their poverty and daily struggles they experienced while growing up in an inner-city America. Many rappers like Kanye West and Logic now use their platform to talk about rising to the top and the obstacles they overcame. Those messages implanted in the music give hope to younger kids going through the same situation. For example, when an artists talks and raps about their distressed childhood with drug-addicted and abusive parents. A kid going through the same situation and get through it easier and see that if this person made it out so can I. When
Have you ever queried why some influential hip hop artists aren't assembling against racial discrimination, police brutality, and other pressing issues plaguing the underserved communities?
Hip Hop is such a diverse genre of music. Within the genre of Hip Hop, there are also many sub genres that help support Hip Hop as a whole. Hip Hop allowed everyone to express themselves differently while being apart of a movement that was and still is bigger than just them. The most important and vastly used categories of sub genres have been broken up into four categories: Mainstream, underground, conscious, and gangsta (Mason). Each one of these categories have different sounds and audiences, and each category has allowed many different messages to be heard.

What separates music from regular sound is organization. Music is broadly just organized sound, but there is more to it than just having beats and notes placed at specific intervals. Apart from noise, music is defined by its emotional appeal: why the artist made the song, how it affects listeners, and what goes on within the song to make it special. Music is used as the "Universial Language" because anyone can distinguish a particular emotion, even when the language is different or absent. One particular song that utilizes this idea is "Sons of Skyrim" from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
When you listen to music today just know 9/10 they are influenced in some way by the “gangsta rap” group NWA. This group had formed in the late 80’s. Following they had made 2 of the most popular songs to this day “F#ck Tha Police” and “Straight Outta Compton”. The groups lyrics were real, brutal and in a way inspirational. They made others want to be themselves and not follow others, to be unique. Even after the split the men continued to influence and pursue in the hip pop world by finding more rappers who end up making a huge impact as well in the world. In a more simple example, NWA was a rap group of 5 men who wanted to voice what was happening to the blacks in america with brutal honesty and how they were being mistreated, little did
Hip hop emerged onto the music scene in the late 1970s and has since become one of the largest entertainment genres across the globe. Numerous styles have been created since its birth, spinning off and growing into a reputable form of music. Initially, hip hop was created as a way to deviate from rock and roll using rhyming couplets and electronic beats not aimed for worldwide success. The genre has now grown into one of the most intricate styles of music, requiring mastery of lyrical prominence, along with the use of unique beats and synthetic variations. Fast forward to the current state of hip hop and you will find that two types of rap are prevalent: conscious rap and mumble rap. Conscious rap focuses of the lyrical value and meaning of what
This can actually be seen in a study by Herd (2009), in 1985-1989 32% of songs had violence in them that increased by 23 % in 1990 that made it go up to over 50%. In 1994-1997 60% of rap songs contained lyrics about violence and it kept on increasing as the years went on. The content of these rap songs can range from sex, drugs, race, religion, social issues, and crime. The early 1990s is when Gangsta rap, new form of hip hop first came out. Once “gangsta rap” was formed the negative influences started to increase. The debate suggests that rap or “gangta rap” encourages anti social and pessimistic behavior. Gangsta rap is a subgenre of hip hop music that many people believe promotes procriminal behavior through glorifying involvement in criminal
Imagine an inner city kid having grown u in an environment where real life street violence is a way of life. His body, having survived personal experiences of violence, endured barely life sustained conditions, and many sleepless nights caused by the constant yet unpredictable call of death. His mind doubtful over where his next meal will come from, lost in search of some higher guidance, struggling through a world, not of innocent childish fantasies, but trapped in a forced reality. His only outlet is the loud blaring music coddling his already pent-up rage, an escape from these harsh realities, seducing him to a life of violence. In him is created a “me against the world” mentality that is manifested in
Some consider defining the word ‘music’ quite hard, since many people have different opinions on what ‘music’ is. Personally I consider music a combination of organised sound, that someone enjoys listening to. Although people may disagree with that, saying all music must have rhythm, melody and harmony, you could say that music is all about opinion, even its definition. But for someone who wants a proper definition, music is defined by The Oxford Dictionary as being “Vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony and expression of emotion.”
I changed my mind about rap music. Growing up, I never really liked it, the quick beats, the vast usage of inappropriate words not equipped for my adolescent ears disgusted me. I associated rap music as being "dirty," only discussing explicit topics and having no real meaning. While everyone else in high school was blaring Drake and Lil Wayne in the parking lots, I was perfectly okay with listening to Demi Lovato or John Legend. During my sophomore year of high school, my friend kept pestering me to listen to the Hamilton soundtrack, and even though the songs were raps, I realized I loved it. Eventually, I started to not associate all rap music as detrimental and discovered that some rappers rapped about important messages of adversity, conflict, and pain. This lead me to listen to Chance the Rapper's "Coloring Book, " Childish Gambino's "Red Bone and J Cole's "4 Your Eyez Only." I realized that rap is just poetry with accompaniment, poetry that has the rhythm and style to bring generations of people together.
