In today's culture people use technology to their advantage all the time. They use it to hack, to learn the latest gossip, or to see breaking news around the world. But, sometimes they get obsessed and instead of a handy tool, it becomes a necessity and a lifestyle. In the 1950s, Ray Bradbury wrote Fahrenheit 451 with the intent to warn society about the dangers of technology and censorship. The 1950s however, did not present most of the technology that we today. Television was not created in the 50s, but this is when it became very popular for the average person to buy one. Ray Bradbury was born August 22, 1920 in Waukegan, Illinois to Leonard Spaulding Bradbury and Ester Moberg Bradbury. He had three siblings in total, two older brothers who were twins and a younger sister. One of the twins died before birth, and his younger sister died around the time he was seven. Growing up, his family had problems economically, and it was most likely worsened during the Great Depression. When he was around the age of 12, he decided he wanted to be an author. He made the decision as he wanted to surpass his heroes and live through his fiction.

Technology has not only changed the world but it has also changed society and everyday life. People no longer have face to face interactions as often as before and people spend a significantly larger amount of time on technology. Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451” is a novel that warns about a lot of different things but one thing to it warns so strongly about is the over- reliance on technology. That is one thing that I believe our society is currently struggling with. Not matter what it is in some way or form technology is involved. I mean how often do you see someone read a newspaper to see what is going on in the world? How often do you see someone use a watch to tell the time and not use their phone? How often do you see someone send a handwritten letter and not send a text or email?

In the short stories by Ray Bradbury, “The Veldt” and “The Fog Horn” plot, theme and characterization intertwine. The personas of each character help drive the plot and theme within each story. This is important because the characters are the personality of the story and are needed to propel the plot, along with keeping the reader engaged especially, with the suspense their dialogue provides.

Technology plays a large roll in society today. Ray Bradbury uses technology in many of his stories to show what types of effects technology can have on society. Whether it be with dinosaurs, nurseries, or smart homes, Bradbury always manages to convey a common theme across many of his stories. This common theme that Bradbury focuses on is the adverse effects that technology has, or may have in the future, on society.

Everyone has seen a guy with earbuds on attached to an iPhone or iPod, or a girl rapidly texting on her smartphone. Our modern world relies on technology and has been an integral part of our life and we embrace the benefits of it. People of today are immersed in technological advancements that provide non-stop communication and instant gratification, whether it’s through a phone, tablet, laptop. But is technology a good thing? “Ray Bradbury imagines the future. Often his vision is dark and foreboding, suggesting that our continued reliance on technology may be our undoing.” I consider Ray Bradbury’s opinion and believe that technology is dreadful and will affect humans and the world in many ways. In the story, he had created a nursery where it became more important than the kids than their family proving that it could take over our precious lives. Though many people think technology is the future of the world, I am on the side where Ray Bradbury’s vision of the future is true and agree that an increasing reliance on technology will lead to disaster for human beings and human relationships. I believe that technology has negatively influenced humans because it isolates us from reality and hinders the interaction and communication with other people.

We are a world locked in with a growing love affair with technology. Routine acts influenced by this new era of rapidly growing technology have created habits which turn our world into one that’s always talking, just like Bradbury writes about in his renowned fictional society in Fahrenheit 451. Elements of his world other than technology, such as censorship, knowledge and life vs death, have been predicted in this book and are rapidly becoming a reality in contemporary society.

Technology is simply the practical application of various scientific principles in the form of modern inventions. The previous century has witnessed a tremendous ever-increasing dependence on the latest technological devices, and drastic amounts of money were spent every year by people to get access to these inventions, and that has continued up till now. In Ray Bradbury’s futuristic dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451, that negative impact of technology on our human nature was perfectly illustrated; additionally, Bradbury’s predictions are surprisingly very closely connected to our present.
