Ready For College Essay

The challenge transitioning to college is that I will not have my parents around to provide for me. I have been around my parents all my life and they have provided for me and made sure I make the right decisions, but when I go to college I have to do everything myself which will be a whole new experience for me since I have never done it before.

Having a college education is an important tool that contributes to several aspects of a person’s life. The areas that are impacted the most would be the professional and personal areas. It is important to learn the value of a college education in order to take advantage of what you learn and how to productively apply it in your personal and professional life. I am writing to you in regards to the blog you posted “The Case Against College Education.” You mentioned, “It is absurd that people have to get college degrees to be considered for good jobs in hotel management or accounting…” It is crucial for an individual to acquire a college degree, however, the American education system is unfair. By attending a college, students have a higher chance of economic success in the future and undergo opportunities to explore a wide variety of possible paths. There are various ways to get a college degree but in the end, there needs to be a lot of reform around education. The question remains, should we help more kids go to college or make it easier for people who did not attend college.

In the article, “What Is College For? (Part 2)” written by Gary Gutting we see a description of his ideal vision to improve education and the intellectual culture of our citizens. Mr. Gutting emphasizes that preparing students for employment should be the job of the elementary, middle and high school rather than college. He argues that higher education is basically unnecessary for the practice of many professions.

Determining college readiness is an essential part in determining who will qualify as a good candidate for admission into a college or a university. The last thing that colleges want is for students to qualify for admission and drop out, this affects drop out rate and graduation rate. According Robin Chait and Andrea Venezia (2009),

College Education Education allows one to improve in the world and creates many marvelous improvements to the world. Education teaches one understanding of new technologies, the ability to determine what’s right or wrong, and helps one to make better choices in one life so that one may pursue he/she’s dreams of happiness. To better achieve in life, one needs to get better education and for that, one needs to complete high school and college. In “Where College Fails us” by Caroline Bird, Bird talks about how college is not for every student and say that college is only for those who are hard workers and believe college is the only way to be successful. On the other hand, Barber, in his “America Skips School” argues that American children are learning many wrong lessons outside of school and that society does not care.

“As many as one in three first-year students won't make it back for sophomore year” (“Freshmen retention rate”). It just so happened that I followed that statistic. Many colleges do not care much if students drop out or flunk out once their tuition checks have been cashed (Los Angeles Times).Growing up in a very strict household and attending private Catholic school, I was ready to spread my wings and fly. I was looking forward to that independence, my own rules and living on my own. I was enthusiastic to get started on my college journey. In my mind, I was about to live the dream. A college education gives a person the opportunity to be successful in life, either financially or morally dependent on the goals that they set for their life. They will choose a college that offer programs for the major of their choice, where they will specialize and receive a degree. The decision to pursue a higher education will give the opportunity to earn a better income over someone who does not have a degree. College is more of life preparation course that will help make sure a successful career. If a person pursues a career in engineering, physics or mathematics their curriculum would include more liberal art preparation courses, in order for them to earn their degree, so someone pursuing a degree in these types of careers are

High school graduation data broken down by ethnicity indicates that 97% of African Americans and 90% of Hispanics are not college-ready upon high school completion (Collins, 2009). As the United States economy requires more students to obtain college degrees, the number of students entering college unprepared becomes a pressing concern. According to Bragg & Taylor (2014) growing concern of college and career readiness (CCR) in the United States is requiring policy makers and educators to review factors that contribute to success. When students enter college unprepared, remediation courses are taken costing the student monies for skills that could have been completed prior to post-secondary education (Jackson & Kurleander, 2013). In order for students to meet standards set by postsecondary institutions, the students must demonstrate the skills and knowledge necessary. David Conley (2010) describes college readiness as, “the level of preparation a student needs in order to enroll and succeed without remediation—in a credit-bearing course at a postsecondary institution.” To achieve college readiness amongst all incoming college students, strategies must be developed for high school students to become college ready.

I chose Texas a&m because it one of the best veterinary schools in the united states i also chose it because it's the closest university to home and i don't have to go out of state to become what i've always wanted. My steps to become a veterinarian is to take my basics (2 years) at stc then transfer to texas a&m.

“The traditional high school focus on an American and British literature tends to weaken secondary students’ ability… Routinely, college professors report that freshmen arrive unprepared for… college work”, stated in a Walden University journal research. Recently, numerous students lack the required skills to succeed in specific courses, transitioning students who are unprepared for college. Formulating an education for students improves the transition and readiness for college and career paths because improved academics increase the preparedness for college, available programs provide an in depth knowledge of college courses and promoted internships accumulate experience and information for career demands.

In retrospect, I greatly prepared myself for the college prerequisites courses in high school. Taking classes in advanced/honors chemistry, psychology, precalculus, and others basic classes significantly prepared me for college. According to, “How to Become a
