This is Really Happening Every person has a life story about how they’ve grown, changed, and learned valuable lessons over the years. In the autobiography This is Really Happening by Erin Chack, the story follows Erin as she narrates her own experiences from surviving cancer, to growing up, to learning about what really matters in life. The story takes place in a variety of settings including New Jersey where Erin grows up and later works, Boston University while she’s in college, across the United States on a road trip, and London where she studies abroad. By the end of the story, Erin has a deeper understanding of just how hard fighting is to get through the obstacles in life. The essays are written out of order based on how important each event is and to make the stories more entertaining so the right information is given at the right time. For example, the first major event in the book takes place in New Jersey where Erin grew up as she has to explain to her childhood friends that she has been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. This is one of the hardest experiences for Erin mentioned in the story while she experiences “the nausa, the body aches, the mouth sores, the chills, the hemorrhoids, and the constant exhaustion” that comes with cancer. (1) She also learns how difficult it is to actually tell the people she cares about that there is a chance she will die and facing their devastating reactions of tears, fear, silence, and rambling apologies. By presenting the information in this order, Erin left off with a more satisfying conclusion to her story. She attended Boston University with a major in journalism to pursue her dream of becoming a writer. During her four years of enrollment, Erin struggles with cancer for herself and her mom, but she still manages to finish strong. At one point, she even studies abroad in London where she meets Alijah, who becomes her best friend over the course of the smeester and after. As she experiences life and culture in London, Alijah and her try new foods, make new friends, and discover a whole other way of living. Even when stress and chaos weighed down on Erin, she recalls Alijah being there for her through it all. To quote her, “Everything swirled around [Alijah] like a watercolor painting, but her face remained steady, constant.” (135) This illustrates how their friendship has made a positive impact on Erin and helped her get through the tough times. College also gives Erin a chance to realize she doesn’t need to be a party girl to fit in, and she’s fine standing apart from the crowd with her group of close friends who she cares about. She discovers for herself that a “not-so-small part of [her] knew this was exactly where [she] was meant to be.” (229) Through it all, Erin has found new
