Reasons Why People Go Into The Western Frontier

The idea of moving West started in the mid-nineteenth century. Editor Horace Greely said “Go west, young man” which encouraged many people to move west. The Journey Westward was hard on many families. They were being uprooted and leaving their homes. They sold their farms and homes in the east and packed wagons with enough supplies to travel for about 6 months. In 1869 alone, an estimated 50,000 people migrated to the new territory. Many women felt that their husbands were on “a wild goose chase” and could not understand why they were being moved to this land.

During the years between 1840 and 1890, the land west of the Mississippi River experienced a wild and sporadic growth. The natural environment contributed greatly to this growth spurt and helped shape the development of the trans-Mississippi west. The natural environment dictated and facilitated the development of the west by way of determining who settled where, how the people survived, why people wanted to settle, and whether they were successful or not.

There are countless reasons why many settlers moved westward. For example, one of the reasons why settlers moved to the west is because of the recently discovered gold in California. According to Document 2: Crossing over the Great Plains by ox-wagons, “..there was much talk and excitement over the news of the great gold discoveries in California..” In addition to that, gold was a way for people to become wealthy, and start a new life. Moreover, a second reason why is that the Government was offering a large amount of land for a fair price. Document 3: Homestead, specifically states that the settlers will receive 160 acres of land for $10.00, if they are able to maintain and farm on it for 5 years. During the years 1790-1860 many changes in the nation were occurring in the values of Americans and in their different societies. The vacant, immeasurable land in the western frontier enabled a shift of change from social, political and economic conformity to more individual techniques and beliefs away from governmental traditions imposed more in the east coast of the nation. As different factors forced people to migrate west in the country it changed not only society and values of people in the west but also the east, transforming into a whole new affluent society. As people started to realize the nations grandness and what the property consisted of the rise in nationalism became very dependent on these enlightened ideas and visions.

Because of the Colorado Gold Rush, people swarmed into the state with the optimism of becoming rich. Even though many of these people were “go backers,” the people that did stay assisted in the development of mining towns all throughout the state. A Pike’s Peak journalist described the flocking of people claiming “thousands from the farther East swarmed into the Missouri valley towns, and enough hardy souls crossed the Plains in the fall of 1858 to give the newly-founded towns of Auraria and Denver at the mouth of Cherry creek on the South Platte about 125 cabins, huts, and tents by Christmas.” The gold rush

During the settlement of the west the completion of the railroads after the Civil War within the West caused a wide variety of the region to settlement and economic development. White settlers had traveled from the north to reach the Mississippi area to farm, ranch and mine. Promoters from the all-western towns had convinced African Americans from the South and East that there were opportunities for blacks out West. Diversity was expanded in the West; there were Chinese railroad workers which brought some diversity to the town. The beginning of the western part of the United States was very different from the eastern region. The west started as the bare minimum but only after the east had been established and civilized. “American folklore is focused primarily on the 19th century, especially west of the Mississippi River. Enormous popular attention in the media focuses on the Western United States in the second half of the 19th century, a period sometimes called the Old West, or the Wild West, frequently exaggerating the romance and violence of the period.” (Wright) Therefore, the west had many different aspects in which it faced in the early stages. People left the West to come to the city for wealth and opportunity. Jack went for the art and William went for business, but I believe others may have left the west simply to see what the big city is all about.
