Reconnect Program

Reconnect program is a community based intervention, established in 1998, that aims to prevent homelessness for individuals aged 12-18 years. The policy uses early prevention strategies to assist young individuals in stabilising their living situation. It also gives assistance in hope to achieve social inclusion, improving involvement with education, work, employment, training and the outside community.

In supporting equity for individuals who are currently homeless, the service provides group work, counselling, mediation and support, in hope to stop the ongoing cycle of homelessness. Ways that they do so are by returning the teen home, supporting ongoing positivity throughout family relationships and by providing the young adult with physical and emotional support. By reinforcing family reconciliation, the teenager can expect heightened solidarity, trust and support. Acknowledging this support enables the individual to positively reevaluate their position and to adapt to cope better with any given situation. This information has been supported through data received by Mission Australia, stating that the levels of cohesiveness among a family have considerably improved after being introduced to the service. Before coming into contact with the Reconnect Program, a large majority of families indicated that the ability for their family to efficiently and successfully get along was rated ‘poor’.
