“I either go to television or turn on the radio in my car” (Whitefield 2011). Before I started this class, that is what I thought about when someone asked me “Do you keep up with the news?”. Most people do not get the opportunity to learn about what is going on around the world in their everyday lives and how they can help out. I feel that being in this class I got the chance to learn more about life and what is happening everywhere, not just insignificant matters such as who Kim Kardashian is now dating or why Kylie Jenner got more lip injections, I am learning about the important things. I am getting the chance to learn about how I can participate in the world to make big changes because of reading The New York Times, “Why Local Newspapers,” and “Freedom is Intended as a Challenge.” The reading and writing experience I had when writing my papers on the news stories was great. Not only did I get the chance to learn more about my surrounding and what is happening in different places such as Russia, but I also had the chance to connect the stories to my own life. I was able to learn better ways to write, such as taking things head on, writing how you truly feel, and writing what you believe is right. We see a lot of problems today. At first it was a little depressing or even scary to see all of the disastrous things happening all across the globe such as the following: shootings, earthquakes, fires, hurricanes, ect. Reading and writing about natural disasters in the New York
to be an exceptional writer; however, during the course of my writing 120 class I faced a myriad of difficulties in efforts to complete my writing assignments. Assignments such as: a memoir, rhetorical analysis, and blog were relatively new writing concepts I have not yet explored, and with the completion of each, I must say I have grown as a writer. College courses such as writing 120 are futile to the success of students who wish to grow professionally as writers in whichever field of business he or she may choose to pursue. To conclude my writing 120 course, I will begin to reflect on the tasks I have completed in efforts to become an effective writer.
As I began this course, reading and writing was a struggle. I never put an effort forward to improve myself in this subject, so my English was naturally impacted throughout my studies. The people I admired within school and throughout my life, never put an emphasis on reading and writing, which affected my reading and writing, coming into this class. The difficulties start from procrastination and continues on to word usage within my writing. Starting from grade school I’ve always had a struggle with reading and writing, but I could confidently say that after taking this course I am a better reader and writer.
Learning to write effectively requires different kinds of practice techniques and support. From a young age I started writing but from an individual we have different pace and technique. As I progress through my years of writing, my technique of writing progresses. What helped me progress to become an effective writer is practice writing essay in my high school years. When writing an essay it can be very hard to start with but after writing your thesis. You have a point to prove along with examples to help resolve your claim. What really help me as writer to write effectively is having a wonderful teacher who cares about his or her students. Classmates who help each other or someone who understand the concept to help revise and give feedback.
Throughout the semester I made tremendous gains as a writer and a future health professional. I came into this class extremely nervous about what was in store, but knew it would be a difficult course and would challenge my writing skills. After our many assignments and readings, I am more prepared than ever to take my skills into the professional world.
Looking ahead into English 101, I want to learn more about the concepts of different writing’s,
Over the course of this year I have had the opportunity to use all of the writing techniques that we have learned in class this year during my assignments. But when going back through and reflecting on my works I have had many different chances to incorporate them in but had missed my opportunity. During the beginning of the year I worked as quickly as I could to finish assignments and was barely able to turn them in on time. This was a huge problem for me because I was not able to fully understand every writing strategy and when and where to use them. However as the year progressed I was able to budget more time for completing my homework so I could incorporate these new strategies that we learned during class into my assignments. Over the course of this reflection I will talk about certain assignments that I could have improved with different techniques and then show how I did.
Throughout my time writing at the City College of New York, I experienced a slow and dramatic transition to my first semester of this college course. During that time, I've learned from several feedback and lessons from certain peers and my professor. Because of the strict comments written in my drafts by my professor, a few helpful suggestions to include in my writing, and a few miserably failures, I was able to see how my writing and habits have changed during the duration of this course. Back in high school, I was always comfortable writing only five paragraph essays (Introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion), but I've never expected to write something more complex. Here, I was encouraged to include as much detail as I can instead of writing something vague
Writing has always been something I dread. It’s weird because I love talking and telling stories, but the moment I have to write it all down on paper, I become frantic. It’s almost as if a horse race just begun in my mind, with hundreds of horses, or words, running through my mind, unable to place them in chronological order. Because I struggle to form satisfying sentence structure, it takes me hours, sometimes even days, to write one paper. It’s not that I think I’m a “bad writer,” I just get discouraged easily. Needless to say, I don’t think highly of my writing skills. When I was little I loved to both read and write. I read just about any book I could get my hands on, and my journal was my go to for my daily adventures. Although it’s
I selected journalism as my elective for this year because I wanted to continue the journalism career that I began in middle school since it allowed me to write about topics that grasped my interest and passion aside from writing required essays in a classroom setting. In addition, I believed that this course would allow me to improve my writing skills by learning the ethical, grammatical, and organizational concepts relating to journalism, such as the code of ethics, the inverted pyramid, and the editorial hierarchy. I also hoped for the course to help me with responsibility and time management since I knew I would have to write articles and have other loads of works from other classes. Not to mention, journalism has allowed me to be motivated to write an outstanding article not for the grade, but for the sole purpose to make the article right. In middle school journalism was an extracurricular activity and this year I was graded on my personal interests, my time management, and my writing quality rather than on the actual learning of a subject. This course has challenged me to write outstanding pieces of work based on my motivation and time management as well without as many guidelines and structure given. It also made me a lot more confident since it requires interaction outside of class to acquire sources for articles. Thus, through reporting I able to establish a rapport with people and build a network. Overall, this course had helped me become a people person,
When I first became interested in what was going on in the world I always turned to the News Channel or a documentary to inform me on that days current event. I never opened a newspaper, magazine, book etc. because I felt it was less time consuming, more intriguing and easier to understand if I listened to the story being told rather than reading it. Because of this class and our weekly article assignments, I realized it is much more interesting to open up a newspaper or print out an article to read rather than watch a television screen to inform me on what is going on in the world today. Not only did this class help me enjoy reading more but it also taught me the real meaning behind key terms and cases that can help me make better use of the article I am reading rather than trying to understand what the story is. I truly believe these article assignments caused a major positive impact on my reading skills, understanding and use of the context and all around better knowledge on what is going on in the world today.
As a young child, reading did not come easy not even the slightest. I remember being held back in first grade because my mother felt my reading was not up to par, boy was she correct. My older brother and younger sister were in the same boat as I. One after another we repeated the first grade in an attempt to strengthen the skill which is still challenging to this day.
Reading and writing was never one of my strong suits in life, and continues to be until today. I have tried to improve my skills over the years, and in the process of doing so, has led me to enjoy the art of this topic. Because of my teachers and the academic opportunities I've had in my life, I was able to find the passion I want to carry out into the world and in my future.
In the ninth grade, my Literature teacher introduced poetry to me in the form of spoken word. I would have never thought that a Shakespeare recitation assignment would have been the window to a world of one of my greatest passions. Since then, I immediately hit the ground running; performing and competing in poetry slams and competitions in my hometown community of Augusta and around the state of Georgia. I knew that words were what I wanted to dissect and assemble, and the stage was where I wanted to be. Years later, I chose a Creative Writing concentration at Georgia State University, and the embarking of a distinctive style began. I soon became torn between the voices of spoken word and written poetry. I learned that there is a skill and a beauty to both, and I have been able to begin fostering a different skill at GSU. The conservational and sometimes rhythmic style of my performance poetry has infused with the illustrative and technical style of my written poetry, and vice versa. The diverse curriculum of my professors, critiques, and insight from other poets in workshops have helped me to become comfortable with owning a distinct and unique voice on the page, as well as the stage.
“You have to read 10 hours this week” said my first grade teacher. In elementary school reading logs were what all the teachers made us do. Every week I had to read a certain amount of hours. I however, never read the amount of hours I was supposed too. I would just fill out the log and tell my mom to sign it. At that time it sounded like a good idea but then came freshman year. Mrs. Daugherty changed my whole perspective on reading and how important it is to read.
Room 307. What a number to remember, the first time entering that classroom was frightening mainly because I’ve heard rumors about that class such as all we do is write essays and we have homework every day. Mainly, I was frustrated because I strongly hated writing and homework. To add on when I first wrote my friendly letter essay I was confused because I didn’t know myself so it was difficult to talk about myself which resulted in a somewhat low grade and a low self-esteem. After that point, we began to learn about the rules of writing and the how to use it correctly and that helped me understand the basics of writing and how to use it correctly. In addition, I didn't realize I had multiple issues with my writing such as comma splices, run-ons, and what she calls it grrr these three issues killed my writing. After struggling multiple times attempting to fix my issues, the two essays that changed the way how I wrote were my “Conformity Vs Individuality” and my “Bystander Editorial” essays. How you ask, thanks for asking it changed how I think and wrote mainly because I got A- and that was an accomplishment at least for me and ever since that A- I used it as a template to get good grades on essays and that truly helped me self-improve and fix my errors. To conclude, I was the worst at writing now I'm better so I want you to take this into consideration Errors + Learning= Success just take it from me.
