The reason why I chose this class is I would like to write graduation thesis in English. I have some difficulties as an English speaker, as a university student in U.S. because of three reasons. Firstly, I thought that there were many differences between writing in Japanese and writing in English for me. I could not understand why I could not write what I want to write in English, why I cannot find what I want to write in English. Secondly, I did not know the way to writing in English as I write in Japanese. Thirdly, I was not good at reading in English. I liked to read in Japanese. However, I cannot read in English as I read in Japanese. Thus, I was not sure I could write, read and think in English and I could not find why I can not. …show more content…
The customizing the contents is the process to narrow the topic to tell which come from my knowledge, considering what they want. Before I took this class, I thought I should write what I want to tell; I lacked perception of my audience. In this class, I recognized the audience for my writing will appear when I succeed to write for them.
Additionally, I realized that I could write in English what I can write in Japanese. When I tacked with project 1, I wrote about my memory of my childhood which I had kept in my mind for 15 years and I knew already what I wanted to write in Japanese before I had written. The tutors in the learning hub understood what I wanted to say and they instilled confidence in me. Thus, I could write about my experience in English for project 1 successfully.
Through project 3, I found my strength, however I failed to write concisely. My strength is that I can judge whether writing is understandable or not because my reading skill too low to understand complicated and difficult writing. Three weeks after I finished project 3, I could not understand my assignment for project three which professor Daniel Patricio grade with 75 points out of 100 points. I realized that I could not organize stricture and I wrote my paper without considering the readers, and I only think about what I want to write. When I wrote the paper, I only think about my opinion, not think about the readability of my paper, thus I
I immensely struggled when writing. Taking my scrambled thoughts and uncoordinated analysis and converting it into clean and understandable words on a page was arduous. I could not express my thoughts in proper academic format. I understood the importance of writing to every subject. It was essential that I learn to condense my ideas and feeling into coherent written word. After much debate, I decided that the best way to improve my writing skills was to take an advanced English course.
English classes are very important if you want to pursuit your academic goal, and there are a lot of things that I learned about academic writing in this semester. At first, I thought that it was going to be easy as long as I kept doing my brief assignments on time and showing up in classes. However, I was wrong, English is hard, especially if you are an international student because the methods of writing an essay are different. Though, I decided to take English 1301 because I wanted to be able to write something that would make it easier for a reader to understand, and of course to make me get good grades in other classes assignments. Also, because I didn’t know the difference between writing a rhetorical analysis essay and writing a normal
When I took this English 101 class four months ago, I wanted to learn how to develop my writing skills and to communicate my thoughts clearly in writing using the English language. My parents are both French specking Cameroon, so I grew up in a French specking house. Before I assume everyone could understand what I was writing and I did not put too much effort to learn the technicalities of the English language.
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really
The toilsome component this semester was transitioning from being a high school level writer to a college-level writer. However, English 10 has by far been my best experience in writing. By taking this course I have retrieved many helpful elements, that will help me become a successful writer throughout college. In high school, essays often gave me stress and anxiety, however, when taking English 10, I was able to learn to enjoy the process of writing purposefully and mindfully. Even though, I have taken advanced placement English courses in high school and have taken a practice run of college level English over the summer with Professor Brenda Venezia, I was still able to retrieve a lot more from this course. To showcase my progress in
I also know it is even harder to persuade you my qualification in finishing class because of plagiarism and it reason. However, even you may not see any improvements on my writing, I still want to say, I was trying hard to reach the basic standards. My mom taught me weird English when I was young—she only got a bachelor degree and speaks English with heavy accent, therefore those apparently awkward English may seem normal to me; and it was deeply root in my mind. Therefore, I may need much more time to be qualify in writing concisely, however, this does not mean I can never be qualify in writing critically and analytically. And, I promise that I will never, in order to make my assignments look fine,
At the beginning, I learned how to write my paragraphs properly and towards the end, I learned how to write an essay. For example, when I'm writing a paragraph, it's important to be more clear and specific in my topic sentence to get the reader to understand my point of view and to draw the reader's attention. For example, in my essay, I wrote “arranged marriage” as my topic. My professor taught me the correct way to write “my arranged marriage” as my topic. Then, I prove the topic sentence by giving clear examples and details information. At last, the conclusion of the paragraph has to wrap up the whole topic. Then, I learned how to write an essay with a better introduction, background information, and thesis. Also, I learned to have more examples and supporting details in paragraphs by comparing and contrasting, cause-and-effect, and problem solution. Before taking this class, I did not know how to write an essay. After learning this information about writing an essay, I can write a good

I sat in my fourth grade classroom staring at the bookshelf when suddenly I caught a glimpse of a dark blue book with a heroic being on the front. I lifted the heavy book and began reading Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief. As soon as I started I fell into this mythical world where gods, monsters, and heroes all existed. It was a rollercoaster through my emotions. The thrill. The suspense. The surprising new book had a grasp on me, to stop reading it would be difficult. I felt attached. As soon as I started, I finished. Devastated, my chase of this feeling has never stopped, no other book has given me the same fulfillment as Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief. As a young reader I would love to find the same joy and thrill (as I did back
I have learned how to properly articulate and develop a thesis statement, how to write while keeping the audience in mind, and how to engage in the steps of the writing process in English composition 110.
In writing it’s important to have an understanding of what you’re trying to convey for your audience in addition to how you you will present your ideas. Effective communication extends beyond having well organized writing expressed in complete and coherent sentences. The style, tone and clarity of writing must also be considered, as they are constantly changing relative to the audience. Again, analyzing one’s audience and purpose is essential to successful writing. Appropriately, when choosing the most effective language, it is important to consider the document objective as well as the reader. In essence, this idea of effective use of language has been the overarching theme of this online English course. Each writing assignment
Writing has always been something I dread. It’s weird because I love talking and telling stories, but the moment I have to write it all down on paper, I become frantic. It’s almost as if a horse race just begun in my mind, with hundreds of horses, or words, running through my mind, unable to place them in chronological order. Because I struggle to form satisfying sentence structure, it takes me hours, sometimes even days, to write one paper. It’s not that I think I’m a “bad writer,” I just get discouraged easily. Needless to say, I don’t think highly of my writing skills. When I was little I loved to both read and write. I read just about any book I could get my hands on, and my journal was my go to for my daily adventures. Although it’s
Reading is one of my favorite pastimes. I am a tuned-in Reader, and I appreciate well written biographies. Enjoyable reading takes my mind off school work and relaxes me. I enjoy academic reading as well, but sometimes it is intense and requires much concentration. Moreover, I am a tuned in reader when it comes to academic subject’s such as; psychology, nutrition, health and history.
My reading process overall is very strong and went smoothly. As I read I annotated the pages and this helped me stay more focused and connected with the reading. Today it was hard for me after I went to the bathroom and came back to the reading because I disconnected from the reading and had to try and dive straight back in. I also put my cell phone far away from me when I read or do homework so that I will not be tempted to look at the phone instead of completing my reading.
Reading is one of the most beneficial activities a man can do. Out of reading, man can be able to discover new things, concepts, places and people. More so, reading is a way to relax our mind and soul, going deeply through the world of story and improves our thinking and internalization process.
