Reflection Essay I have had different writing experiences throughout high school so I was able to write my essays fairly well. I am better at grammar than I am at putting a fully developed paragraph together. During this semester, I learned about modifiers and how to correctly use commas; I thought I knew what those were pretty well, and as it turns out, I didn’t really. I believed that during this semester I developed a lot of skills such as communication. I struggled with the first group paper because I felt like my group members didn’t care enough to write their paragraphs. I realized that people write at different stages because they have busy lives, and after we figured out the situation, the second paper went a lot more smoothly. Another thing I have improved upon is being a thinker because I have to think of who the audience is, and how to phrase sentences correctly and professionally. I believe I have gained more rhetorical knowledge this semester. An example is that every paper had a subject, and I had to come up with what was best for me to write about. I had to think of things that were going to be effective enough to portray in my essay. For example, in the essay I wrote about the expectations and reality of college, I thought about what had more examples, whether if the expectations of them were actually true. I figured out that they weren’t so I had to come up with reasons that were different. For the audience, I had to figure out how to address the point of view. For example, in the process paper we had to say “you” but in my narrative essay, I had to use “I.” The difference was that in the process paper was directly talking to the audience, but in the narrative essay, I was also talking to the audience but they were my own thoughts and experiences. I learned that which point of view you need to talk about is important because it can be confusing or hard to understand what you are trying to portray in the essay. I have improved in my critical thinking abilities this semester. I have learned a lot from reading examples either from the textbook or the model essays because they simplify how they are supposed to be written. In the classification paper, I was confused on how to go about creating
When I first got accepted into Stuyvesant High School, I heard countless of rumors stating: “Oh the workload is terrible”, “The competition is so fierce” or “Out of schoolwork, extracurriculars, or sleep: you can only pick two.” I found it hard to let it faze me, since I graduated from one of the most prestigious middle schools. However, the rumors transformed into reality when I stepped into Mr. Nieves’ Freshman Composition Class. The workload at the beginning of the year was brutal, coupled with assignments from other core classes that seem unaware of the workload of other teachers. Reading assignments were a regular, and there were journal entries and occasional quizzes to keep us in line. What made it bearable was the friends I made in that class; everyone had their own opinion about the topic we were talking about, and listening to other perspectives really broadened my horizon and enriched my learning experience in Stuy. Another thing that this class has taught me is the importance of time management, a skill that I will carry on for the rest of my high school career and life. When I choose to sign up for Mr. Nieves’ AP American Literature class in my Junior Year, I was hoping to relive the discussion-based lesson plans and meet more outstanding peers. I was not disappointed, to say the least, reflecting through all the experiences at the end of the course. The lesson plans he laid out for us were an interesting mix between small lectures and class output, and what I
I would like to think that I had some significant growth as a writer in my first semester as a college student. My rhetorical analysis essay, persuasive essay, and reflective analysis essay were all very different from each other in how I approached them and felt about them, but each one helped me grow as a writer in different ways. The rhetorical analysis was my first college essay so I felt some extreme self-imposed pressure to do well on it. I really enjoy writing persuasive essays because it causes you to form your own opinions and support them with evidence. My least favorite essay would most likely have to be the reflective analysis essay. I absolutely despise sharing my thoughts and emotions with people, let alone writing them. Beginning the essay was extremely difficult for me. However, I did found it to be the easiest essay to write once I had all my ideas gathered together. The point is, these three essays all had their pros and cons to them, but nonetheless, they each helped me grow as a writer in their own way, which helped me reach many of the stated outcomes for this class. This paper examines some of my work in these essays and describes how I was able to reach some of the course objectives.
Throughout this semester I believe I have grown a whole lot more than just being a better writer. I have become a better researcher, interviewer, and observer. In all of my previous English classes, the writing process was a four-hour typing session followed by one other person quickly reading through my paper. It really wasn’t much of a process at all. Over this last semester, I can honestly say I have learned a tiny part of the “process” of writing.
Throughout this semester there are many skills that I have noticed have improved through the constant writing of essays for this class. The one that I find most noticeable is a habit I had long struggled with which was essentially my tendency to be over necessarily wordy when writing my essays. I believe that I was able to somewhat fix this subconsciously, just by knowing that I was no longer in high school, and could no longer get by with just attempting to fill up my word count. I also believe I have greatly improved in my topic selection. In high school I would throw caution to the wind and just pick whatever topic came to mind just in an effort to get it done. I have been much more calculated in college, and I believe that it has helped me write better essays. While these were the
Over the course of this semester, I can gradually see a change in my writing process. I have been able to think about the topic, I am given and write a well thought out essay. However, I am not the best in the essay department, I have been meeting with my teachers, peers editing my papers in order to obtain their sense of the essay I’ve written. In previous years, I would write essays and think they were well developed, but that wasn’t the case. As a writer, I never really knew how to edit my own work but with time I have been able to change that. I have been able to read the text in
I have learned many things throughout the course of the term like how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. In this class I have learned to write and format an essay the correct way such as a rhetorical essay and visual analysis and lastly compositors essay. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly.
The lesson I’m going to tell you about was a very important one. It shaped me into who I am today, and the outlook I have on things. This might not be a situation that other people would think would be important, or necessary, or something you should remember for years to come. But this moment has stuck with me since I was 8. This instance was when I Skipped school back in 3rd grade.
This semester I have learned quite a lot about concepts like critical thinking, writing, and reading. For example, when reading the book “Naming What We Know”
When I started high school, I was afraid of taking senior English. I wasn’t very good at writing papers. Once I met Mrs. Jenkins, she made me realize that I was safe because she helped us how to understand "TIQATIQAW". She first made us sit in a circle to know more about us and what we are struggling on because she made the promise about making us a better writer. I've learn that never give up on writing a paper because at the end I will look back and realize that I did a good job with it. I struggled a lot writing, but Mrs. Jenkins helped me a lot and without her I wouldn’t be passing English because she wants us to be better writers.
For the past three and a half years I have participated in the school band. In that time I’ve taken part in concert band, marching band, and jazz band. Setting up my schedule in sixth grade kicked off the adventure.
The first thing that I learned from this class was by The Dominican Charism “The Dominican passion for truth presumes a confidence in the intellect’s capacity for discerning truth and for reaching a level of clarity that enables both teacher and student to distinguish truth from error, and distortions and half-truths from the truth” (Charism) It made me more motivated and confident in what am doing today. Having a connection between the student and the teacher is nice, especially when the teacher understands how each student thinks. However, for my short-term goal, is to get a bachelor’s in business administration. My graduation will be next May of 2018; I am hoping that I can attend my graduation because this is the goal that I have
I was eager to see how my research paper had been scored for I felt that it was one of my best works, worthy of an A. I turned to the last page of my 6 page paper only to find that I was 2 points off the expected grade. The disappointment that immediately followed was justified by my thoughts as I questioned Ms.Brumbacks grading policy. I confirmed my beliefs when my friends had received even lower marks, that contradicted their intelligence. As quickly as these thoughts came to mind they left, for I am a reasonable person and I don't let my emotions judge logical events. I had received a low grade because I only spent a day writing the research paper and my bibliography was pitiful. The grade I had received did not reflect my
Being accepted into May’s Business School this past May, I started to think forward to all the exciting job opportunities and different career paths that I could explore. Through the guest speakers and seminar sessions, I have grown to understand the steps needed to succeed in our evolving job market. By enabling myself to take this course I have learned many professional lessons which include; the value networking can have on your job placement, interview preparation, and how ethical behavior in the workplace can affect your performance.
As life becomes hectic and challenging, being able to manage my time is increasingly difficult. Additionally, being involved in online education adds a layer that requires time, that can be hard to find. Personally, through the use of a planner, eliminating distractions and studying at a coffee shop, has helped me find a way to balance my life.
Upon further review of my past papers, I found some small grammatical errors that needed to be edited. In my unit one paper, there were a few errors that you had marked. I fixed those oversights then continued on with my revisions. In the second paragraph, I moved a comment to after a citation section in order to back up the information with my own thoughts as I had learned a little further in the semester. Another change I had made was to change a word that was repeated multiple times in a sentence. I also revised unit twos paper. I had received a perfect score on my paper, but upon rereading, I noticed a few things that I felt should be changed. They were not big changes, but I believe the modifications helped the information flow
